I am not sure if this the right place, but does anyone know a good package for WinXP that has a good amount of codecs that are frequently used but not default to media player or default DVD player programs?

There's the following:
K-Lite Codec Pack:

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack:

Either what Exodemia posted, or the codecs posted here.
-
Just to clear things up. K-lite is bad, very bad. Not much good unless you want to crap up your system. Use the codecs i have in my guide that crash posted.
-
No, K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is great. Everything works with that pack installed. I use their "Playback" profile and haven't encountered any problems with it.
Calvin, care to clarify? -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Will third K-Lite. I've been using a rather old version of K-Lite for more than a year now and I've never had a problem with it.

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack just works...and that's what I like about it.

I dont want to make another post (unless i have to) but could you guys also suggest a program that is safe and not a spyware that can help sort out my hard-drive space usage? I need something that can give me a good look at the distribution of space taken by my files.
also, @calvin or crash: what is the difference between the de-frag programs listed in the "Best Free Software for Windows" topic vs. the default one with Windows? and what is a anti-rookit software? -
The last time I tried something else rather than K-Lite I ended up with a kind of weird feeling that something wasn't right...
-
-
-
No, probably just my feelings. Either way, K-Lite with the Playback profile used to install is great. It doesn't install you all the **** and just keeps it to a minimalistic level.
-
-
It is always adviseabel to install only the codecs that you actually use. This keeps incompatabilities down.
-
I've ran K-lite with no problems for a few years now. I tried out the CCP one and it borked up my system, I'll stick with K-Lite.
-
RogueMonk, that can be very time consuming sometimes. Plus, it's much more easier to install only one package.
-
i use CCCP with no problems
-
-
I also use CCCP without issues, and didn't even configured anything. Just clicked OK all the way and just worked!
-
Why not just use vlc media player? It plays everything for me.
-
K-Lite will do the business great, I never had any problems using it when I was a Windows user
-
-
-
-
I guess that makes sense. How much better are the codecs? Is there a significant increase in picture quality?
-
i use cccp
-
FFDShow anyone?
-
VLC Player the best player you dont need to install any codec to mess up your system, the only file format cant read is realplayer. but u can always intall real alternative and windwos media player classic..
VLC + media player classic = read all media files -
-
I like K-Lite codec pack myself, it has the useful diagnostic program that tells you what codecs are required to get a file to play properly. Newer versions I've realised are necessary when video encoders start refreshing their tools.
-
I installed CCCP and it worked great, but now my AVG picked up Trojan Horse Downloader.Zlob>UAQ. I uninstalled CCCP and AVG finds nothing.
-
Wow - after a little more research, it seems AVG may have created a false positive. I found this on CCCP forum - http://www.cccp-project.net/smf/index.php?topic=489.0

just download vlc player,it plays everything and even hd,but for hd i use coreavc codecs and media player classic. i did used to use cccp codecs with media player classic, but some hd movies would stutter and so i uinstalled cccp and installed core avc and they play fine.
-
Pure Codec...everything works including HD.
