I am not sure if this the right place, but does anyone know a good package for WinXP that has a good amount of codecs that are frequently used but not default to media player or default DVD player programs?

Either what Exodemia posted, or the codecs posted here.

Just to clear things up. K-lite is bad, very bad. Not much good unless you want to crap up your system. Use the codecs i have in my guide that crash posted.

No, K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is great. Everything works with that pack installed. I use their "Playback" profile and haven't encountered any problems with it.
    Calvin, care to clarify?

Will third K-Lite. I've been using a rather old version of K-Lite for more than a year now and I've never had a problem with it.

The problem with k-lite is that lot uses many different codecs to decode one thing. After i uninstalled it, i had much clearer video and no problems ever since. Especially for you Wolf, why not use CCCP?

I will try it out the next time I do a reinstallation. Generally I stick with K-Lite (and older software in general: can you say Office 97?) because I'm a firm believer in "if it's not broken, don't fix it" :D

I dont want to make another post (unless i have to) but could you guys also suggest a program that is safe and not a spyware that can help sort out my hard-drive space usage? I need something that can give me a good look at the distribution of space taken by my files.

also, @calvin or crash: what is the difference between the de-frag programs listed in the "Best Free Software for Windows" topic vs. the default one with Windows? and what is a anti-rookit software?

The last time I tried something else rather than K-Lite I ended up with a kind of weird feeling that something wasn't right...

Either you set it up wrong or it's just your feelings. My videos just looked so much clearer once i got CCCP, and my computer was using a lot less ram/cpu. I can watch 720p stuff and still have enough power left over to browse the net and play doom.

No, probably just my feelings. Either way, K-Lite with the Playback profile used to install is great. It doesn't install you all the **** and just keeps it to a minimalistic level.

All i ever watch is anime, or maybe the occasional movie so CCCP does just fine for me.

It is always adviseabel to install only the codecs that you actually use. This keeps incompatabilities down.

I've ran K-lite with no problems for a few years now. I tried out the CCP one and it borked up my system, I'll stick with K-Lite.

RogueMonk, that can be very time consuming sometimes. Plus, it's much more easier to install only one package.

It's not that easy to explain but plain and simple, VLC doesn't make the videos look as good and shiny as they could be. Newer codecs can.

Just because it can play everything, doesn't mean it plays them right.

I guess that makes sense. How much better are the codecs? Is there a significant increase in picture quality?

VLC Player the best player you dont need to install any codec to mess up your system, the only file format cant read is realplayer. but u can always intall real alternative and windwos media player classic..

VLC + media player classic = read all media files

I like K-Lite codec pack myself, it has the useful diagnostic program that tells you what codecs are required to get a file to play properly. Newer versions I've realised are necessary when video encoders start refreshing their tools.

I installed CCCP and it worked great, but now my AVG picked up Trojan Horse Downloader.Zlob>UAQ. I uninstalled CCCP and AVG finds nothing.

just download vlc player,it plays everything and even hd,but for hd i use coreavc codecs and media player classic. i did used to use cccp codecs with media player classic, but some hd movies would stutter and so i uinstalled cccp and installed core avc and they play fine.
