svchost is a vital component to Windows processes.
It's best to leave them alone. -
svchost.exe is part of Windows that lets it run a certain way. Every time a service needs a separate instance of it, it'll create another process with the same name. In a standard Vista, you will see two svchosts taking a lot of RAM, and lots of smaller ones.
A simple Google search tells you what it is - shouldn't have wasted all that time reinstalling.
There are complex ways of making those processes take less RAM - that being shutting down unnecessary services. -
i terminated 2/3 svchost and the laptop is working perfectly and the harddrive lamp is not always on that means i am saving the harddrive work time while downloading overnight, can u tell what svchost do i can understand (i close 2 of them nothing happens but just saves ram)

regarding the process, a detailed explanation is here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056
in case that you're interested what's the particular svchost.exe connected with, you may try process monitor, available here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx
- launch it and go to menu Tools - Process Tree -
thank your for your responce
at least this means that my svchost is not a virus -
AKAJohnDoe Mime with Tourette's
Or simply enter tasklist /svc in a command prompt window
-
In Vista, you can right-click the svchost processes, and click Go To Services.
-
Task Manager > View > Select Columns > Command Line
Will also let you see what svchost is running. -
You can get quite detailed info about what each instance of svchost is doing by using Sysinternals' Process Explorer (google on those last three words and one of the first couple of hits that come back should take you right to the Sysinternals' webpage on Microsoft's website).
