I know that svchost.exe is a critical process, but on average, it uses nearly 90 mb of my memory, and all of the processor for about a minute after startup. I've allready scanned for viruses and wondered if there is anything i can do to reduce its drain on the system. btw, there are 11 instances of svchost running on my computer.

There are multiple instances of svchost because each instance is a grouping of windows services where svchost checks if they work properly and loads dlls. To see which services are in which group, type
    C:\>tasklist /svc /fi "imagename eq svchost.exe"
in command prompt if you got XP. I don't know much about vista.
For me there is always one svchost that use 40-50% of my CPU for about 30 seconds after I connect to the Internet, so I figure it loads services and their dlls related to the Internet.

I tried number 2 of the instructions but the CPU doesn't rise significantly. I'll try disabling AU later. Thanks for the link though.

Cpu % shouldn't rise, should fall (lower %). I had to disable AU, manually update. Really seem to eliminate the long cpu% spike during the first 1-2 min after startup.

the only reason i am worried is because after startup with nothing running, 800 mb of my memory is being used... and svchost uses alot of it. the next biggest user is aero glass, then mcafee
