When I boot XP there's a svchost.exe task running one cpu at full throttle for several minutes. In my dual core lappy we are full 50% utilization in taskman.
If I kill the task I can't access any shares on the network. A log out & back in doesn't fix it, have to reboot. So I suspect it's soemthing to do with accessing the domain...
I know svchost is a provider of network services, but I wish there was some way to see who/what was calling it. Sometimes there are many many svchost.exe tasks running, but I don't know how to see what's calling them.
I suspect this is benign and not some sort of intrusion, but I would sure like to understand why ONLY my laptop does this (no other machines on my network do this.) It has passed several different virus and spyware tests.

Hmm.. I recommend running procexp (like Task Manager, but gives more info) first to see what the name of the service is..

This is normal and is not considered an issue.

My computer does this when I first boot up, too. I heard it was pretty normal, so while it does annoy me, I just deal with it.
Best solution I came up with was to reboot as little as possible! If I put my computer to sleep, it does not happen either, but it will after hibernation. I see you're on XP, so that may not mean much to you though. -

I've found svchost.exe does this when I have my torrent client open and active, so it's definitely network related. But like others said benign at boot.

I have it the same way on startup when my Nod32 AV starts up and there`s no network...it`ll hold the system non responsive for about 10 seconds.

Process Explorer by Sysinternals is another great program for identifying these duplicate processes.
