What do you call too many??
    (You do run several)

Get the Process Explorer from the Sysinternals suite and tell us what is runnin in the process that causes this CPU load.
(You may be best off running Process Explorer as an admin)

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx

On another note - you don't use KIS 2010, do you?

    Hmm.

Try unistalling your Security Software (things like BitDefender) then reboot, and switch the services back on.

I know for me KIS broke and caused a 50% CPU load.

    hello again
the system has again got 100% cpu usage it was all right till now but something has again wnt wrong.it happened when i stopped my vista tweak utilities from performing a registry tweak.the system first hanged and then was very slow i saw that cpu usage has again gone to 100%.but this time it a svhost.exe its running dcom server launch service and hence can not be stopped.its taking almost 80% of cpu at times.the system is working right but is slow.
pls anyone know how to fix it.

DCOM and Plug & Play? - Get rid of your security software and try running your computer - seems similar to my KIS problem I once had...

I don't know what it is exactly - but KIS 2010 breaks when you change anything major on your system (e.g. instla/unistal Office 2010, or WLAN drivers...)

Might be the same with Norton - if the CPU load vanishes, then you can reinstal Norton, it would then stay fine until your next change to the system - if the CPU load continues, then its another cause.

    Use Process Explorer:

If you find it doesn't occur without Norton - then Try Micrsoft Security Essentials :)

I'd rather suspect a (random) tweaking utility from causing issues (by perhaps disabling a needed process) than Norton Internet Security/NIS2010.

While perhaps time consuming, have you tried reverting all tweaks, with NIS2010 installed?
Also, what are your hardware specs?

Well, KIS definitely had that problem - Dave had the same experience with an unnamed AV...
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=435741
(That's my KIS thread... don't ask me why and how this happens...)

And I do not "tweak" my OS - I leave all system processes as they are - this even happened on a clean install I think... (when I got my SSD)

    I've read about your issue Detlev but the OP states his system wasn't without tweaks;

So that would be my major suspect in this particular case.

    Ok, that's true.

But shouldn't an antivirus be independent from all but the most important OS services?

well guys i have to tell u some of my observations
1.the symantec service when stopped do bring down cpu utilization by about 5-10%
2.however major difference was made by windows defender and spooler services(which seems to be major culprits in my case) when i stop them cpu functionality is back to normal.

Ok... in that case we shall work on the assumption that its not the Antivirus (for the time being) - why don't you set up all services the way they should be when you instal the OS?

Well, the spoolserver is your printer service - Windows Defender, I used to run Windows Defender and KIS... but apparently you should disable it...

Check if your anti virus might interfere with Windows Defender.

well i have disabeled defender completely (from start up as well).i have tried unistalling norton and the problem seemed lesser but on reinstall it was more so i guess yes defender was interfering with norton or vice-versa.and as for spooler i do not know what is exactly wrong there.

Try removing your printer's drivers - and reinstalling them.

Yepp, it does, you may have to run it in safe mode though... (not sure if it actually get's access to system files in normal use)

But that requires damage/corruption of system files.

there are recent studies that say that anti-virus and malware scanners will MISS eight out of ten potential infections. An 80% failure rate. At the same time they are slowing and otherwise messing with the use of your machine.

You'd be doing far better to yank everything but MSE from your machine and just practice safe, sensible, intelligent web surfing and downloading.

i do not think any damaged or corrupted files are there on my system.haven't had any such problem.
well i actually plan on installing win.7 on my system by next week so i guess a complete fresh install will surely end the problem .and it has already lessened teh cpu usage is normal just have to stop some services :p ;)

My advice is - on your clean install, keep all services - only stop programmes from auto running or services that you yourself have added.

In the long run that's the better path.

Tweaking Utilities are dangerous as they don't tell you what they do? (Who said it first on here? Gary? I agree :))

Nothing inherently wrong with tweaking, IF and ONLY IF you know the SPECIFICS of what the tweak is actually doing and understand WHY it works. Tweaking tools that tell you neither should be banned from the face of the earth.

Can you provide a link to any of the three? I did a google check and couldn't find any specific articles. I'd really like to read this. Was it in the Technet magazine. I get that one each month (or did since they have now ceased printing it) but don't recall seeing an article on that, but then again I don't scour it as thoroughly as I do MSDN.
