sw.exe

I want to ask if anyone in this forum lately been getting this weird "end program" message everytime they restart or shut down their computer about "sw.exe"? I think I started getthing this message ever since I did Microsoft update thing.

 

I'm not sure if this is what you have but its worth a shot. I think it could be some form of spyware. I found this on the symantec website with a solution from the following link: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2004-061111-5712-99&tabid=3

If that doesn't work post here and we'll try something else.

 

Hmm...I did all of Syamntec's instructions and everything was normal. But it is still doing the stuff.

 

If it's no longer resident after removal, you should be good to go now.

 

http://www.auditmypc.com/process/sw.asp is just one reference. Have you tried Google? It's really simple to find information on processes by entering them as search terms.

 

Me too, for the past few days, and I just ran the Microsoft updates. Any time I log off or shut down, the "Unable to end program" box pops up with program name: sw. I click "End Now" and it shuts down.

I'm on a desktop machine with Windows 2000.

Can't find any of the registry keys that the spyware program by that name should have installed. Spybot Search and Destroy didn't find anything. (Well it did, but not that.)

I'm sure lots of people just ran Microsoft update last week. That may or may not be our problem. Does anyone have any other ideas?

 

Got exactly the same problem on my W3J

I did a windows update somewhen last week but the problem started the other night when Adobe reader tried to update itself but could not find one of the files needed for the update.

So I uninstalled Adobe and installed the latest version from their site, but the problems still remain.

I'm getting:

"DWIN.EXE - DLL INITIALIZATION FAILED" which I now know is something to do with windows' Dr Watson

And the "SW.EXE" problem, which seems to be related to "ACRORD32.EXE" on my machine, something to do with Adobe.

I've also noticed that the bluetooth does not automatically switch on on boot up like it used to before the updates. Whether this is actually related to the updates or not is another question.

All in all, it's pretty annoying

 

Yea right now, I still have that error, but its totally random. I don't know what software or what update is causing it.

 

Ok, I may have fixed mine. Went back to Windows update and tried again. It wanted to install Service Pack 1 for my IE 6! (I'm pretty sure I had that already.) Anyway, I let it do it's thing, and the problem seems to have gone away.

 

I had the exact problem as J.A.G.. I did a full scan for sw.exe. including hidden. Then updated antivirus and did a full virus scan. Nothing.

I found the one and only entry in the registry after a Registry scan for sw.exe. In the registry folder was also a boot.ini entry. It was activating on boot. The long dead (backdoor virus? )program could not shut down when Windows shutdown since it no longer existed causing a hang which then caused Dr Watson to activate. Dr. Watson failed because you were shutting down(part of the displayed error message).

I removed the entire folder. Shut down went perfect with no hang.

 

Ran across this site a while ago.. not sure it can help.. but if you need to know about a process this place is quite helpful.
