I am buying a dell, and was wondering if I should pay the $10 and get teh system rerstore cd? Will I be alright with the symantec system recovery software? can I make my own cd? or is it a worthwhile investment. thnx

I would definately get the restore cd. Otherwise when you reformat windows all of the crapware from Dell will re-install.

System recovery software only backs up your data. It does not reformat windows.

I heard the system restore cd is recommended because the symantec one makes your initial system occupy a large HD space with useless programs too

I hate that companies do this now. You paid for a version of Windows when you bought your laptop, why don't they give you the disk? You have to request it AND pay for it. I really think these guys are getting away with highway robbery. To top it off many time the install disk they give you will install all the crapware! I think they should be requred to give you an actual Windows CD, not their junky restore disk. Sorry, this os just one of those things that I hate.

You should give in a give them the $10. Or plan on buying an OEM disk or something because you wil want a Wndows install disk.

You can get a free restore disc if you just call and ask for it.

I wish major OEMs would sell a computer that wasnt preinstalled with an OS. I know they have contracts with MS but I have never used the OS that came preinstalled. You are forced to pay for it, you cant sell it, and for me at least, most likely wont use it.

You don't need to buy one. If you have a recovery cd/partition that creates the i386 folder on your hard drive then you can make a clean OEM disc using those. However that is incomplete. What is missing are the OEMBIOS files. You can however extract them from your system directory.

After that you can create a normal OEM disc or unattended or slipstreamed.

if you dont buy them then just order them when you first get the laptop, dell will deliver the disks free, and they come within a few days...thats what i did
