    Is this possible on a laptop? If yes how would one decide to boot from one or the other?

    Yes, though you may need to make sure during install that each is first in the boot order, so that it assigns each its own boot sector. Use the BIOS boot options to choose which to boot from.

    Yes it's possible but if using XP and Vista it's easier if you install XP first. The reason is the boot manager changed between XP and Vista. When you install both OS's there will be a boot manager to select which OS you want to boot up in.
