you know that popping sound when windows attempts to notify you of something like you have un-used icons on your desktop? it's the sound that eminates from the lower right hand task bar icons during the messege. well that sound keeps happening and i do not know what is causing it. so annoying!

♠Open the control panel, go to sound and open the sounds tab. Sometimes sounds like that get assigned to like window close, or something similar, so something like closing a window causes the sound. Took me a while to figure out first time I saw this happen.

For a fun trick on your tech savvy friends, change their minimize/maximize to the hardware malfunction sound :p

it's the "system notifcation" which performs the windows xp ballon sound effect that keeps happening.

what do you suggest i do, disable it? the settings appear to be ok from browsing them...

    I got this same problem
I just renamed the SYSTEM NOTIFICATION .wav file
    Solved!

I noticed this problem began when I made mods to the registry

So the solution is to hide the symptoms, rather than treating the disease?

It's the new thing to do ;) One could also disable all system sounds!

To the OP, is there a notification icon or bubble that appears with that sound?

My IDT sound settings on my HP has a power saver mode, enabled by default, that shuts down the speakers when system is idle. This causing a popping sound from speakers. Check for something similar.

Did you read past the title of the thread? The issue is with an obviously SYSTEM generated sound due to an event, not some random HARDWARE generated sound. Otherwise renaming the SystemNotification.WAV file would not have made the symptoms go away.

True, it would be better to kill the disease, but that doesn't mean we don't treat the symptoms in the meantime. Think of it as a good hack. A helpful hack. A hack that keeps you from going crazy, etc, etc. ;)

Can you figure out why it keeps popping up? It could be something as simple as the maintaining your own AV turned off.

To change any sound that you don't like, all you have to do is open the Control Panel, go to Sound and open the Sounds tab (as Hep! suggested). Then, open the "Sound scheme" drop down menu, choose whichever sounds you want to change (e.g. System Notifications or Menu Popups) and select "No sound" or any of the other provided sounds in the Sounds list. The system even gives you the option to listen to a sample of each one, to see if you like them. There ya go, solving the problem, not the symptom! By the way, you can customize all the sounds on your system as well.

Exactly how does that solve the problem? The problem is something is triggering the System Notification very often. Your "solution" is no different from the one the OP used. It treats the symptoms, but does nothing to solve the problem which is what is constantly triggering the System Notification in the first place.
