so if I install it as 32bit vista, can I use the same install disk later to upgrade to 64 bit? hell, can I install both versions at the same time and dual boot till the 64 bit driver problems get better?

That is correct for Ultimate but not for Home Premium. In the retail package of Ultimate, it has both. But not Home premium. Are you doing an upgrade or a clean install?
I would presume that you can do both provided that they aren't on the same logical drive but I'm not sure. -
Only Ultimate has both 32-bit and 64-bit versions in the box. But for all the other editions, if you want the 64-bit version, you fill out a web form and give Microsoft about $10 for shipping and they'll send you the 64-bit disc.

Vista may be short-lived enough that the 64 bit non-ultimate may never really catch on.

If something works on 64-bit, it pretty much works on all the 64-bit editions. So while it matters if 64-bit as a whole catches on or not (for hardware driver and software support), it doesn't really matter if other 64-bitters are running the same edition as you or not.

Oh, I think 64-bit will catch on. It has been the standard for mainframes since before the turn of the century. It is only a question as to whether Vista is the 64-bit OS that will catch on on other platforms.
the Vista retail version has both 32 and 64 bit versions are on the disk right?
