From what I can conclude after years of usage, they're all good at something different...I used several times defender, spybot, adaware, etc. on heavily infected computers and they always found different things (sometimes one program is able to detect spyware X and remove it, but when you scan with another prog you find that the second one can remove things left by the first one about spyware X,etc.)

I never used real-time protection so I can't tell you about it, but if you just use antispyware software for ondemand scans, I think it's always better to use multiple programs for a more complete protection...

I used Windows Defender for several months and it never found anything so I uninstalled it. Avg Anti-spyware, Spybot S&D, and Adaware have all found baddies on my computers.

I have AVG and lavasoft but recently installed Spyware T. The three work nicely together. The new version of Windefender would not install properly.

With a firewall and antivirus, I don't really think real-time protection is necessary.. I just use adaware for the odd on-demand scan now and then.

AVG Anti-Spyware used to be Ewido. It's always worked well for me.
