OK, in the last 3 or 4 days I noticed my XP starts, then hangs somewhere before the log on screen, then shuts down and restarts .. and then at the choice of how I want windows to start I give it start in normal way, and it boots up fine.
This happens on the first boot up for the day, I believe, and then Windows boots up fine later on, until the next day .. ?!?!
Now I notice a recent update that MS installed (about 2 or 3 days ago), but I cant find it. So searching about what MS did, I found this CAPICON thing that even has a update now, KB931906, and they both were not there last time I checked my control panel. So I can remove the update, but it doesn't let me remove the CAPICOM thing at all.
what MS says about it is this:
"CAPICOM is a Windows component that provides services to programs that enable security that is based on cryptography. This includes functionality for authentication that uses digital signatures, for enveloping messages, and for encrypting and decrypting data. "
has anybody else noticed boot up problems lately ?
I think maybe some Update software causes this issue, but what updates even before the log on screen ?

What SP is your XP? I'm running SP3 and I don't get this update, and according to MS's download page, it applies to systems with XP SP2.
You may want to upgrade to SP3?
EDIT: This update is quite old actually, date published was 5/8/2007, are you sure this is the one installed recently? -
I have SP3
also, the computer booted fine today .. dang -
By the way, check your Event Viewer for log errors, sometimes it's able to log what the problem was during boot-up.
this new MS thing .. CAPICOM .. and it's update
