i have may videos and clips in some of the folders on my computer but when ever i open the folder if it has more than ten videos windows explorer will crash and sometime i will have to restart it using task manager. is there a way to fix this? also i have window vista but it happened on my old computer that had XP

Try clearing the thumbnail cache through Windows Disk Cleanup.
-
i do that every night but it doesn't last even an whole day
-
Try going to the folder options and tick "Do not cache thumbnails"
There should be a hidden thumbs.db file in the folder. That could be corrupt. -
i don't see it i'm looking in the folder options and view and don't see it

I had a similar problem with Flash video files - and turning of thumbnails worked, but the reason is another one.
For Flash - some Real player .dll crashed - try changing your default player on that filetype - say to Windowm Media Player (install ffdshow too)
See if that removes the problem - then look at your error report as to which file actually caused the crash.
Edit: Google was my friend finding the solution in the end. -
It's probably corruption in the hidden thumbnails db file; however, are you getting any errors or warnings logged in the event viewer that relate to these crashes?

You probably have some files in that folder which are being previewed using 3rd party codecs, resulting in explorer crashing.
You can either uninstall the codec, or disassociate the codec from explorer by editing its settings.
