I'm using acronis disk manager and it won't let me resize my 35gb used space partition to 40gb from 450gb, the least it lets me reisize to is to 140gb. Why is this happening?

Ok, so I had a nice long reply typed and I hit ctrl+z to undo something and lost it all. Darn. So, here's a link to a post I wrote a very long time ago detailing what you need to do in order to shrink your partition further.

Before reading though, I recommend that you leave about 20-30% as free space on this new partition AFTER you have re-enabled System Restore, PageFile, and Hibernation.

This process will take you through everything except for moving your registry/boot files. If they get in the way of further shrinking, then you'll need to do a boottime defrage using either PerfectDisk or SmartDefrag.

Follwing my instructions, you'll be able to get the partition that you want, easy.

    Good luck!

UPDATE - I just reviewed that old post and it doesn't explain how to disable the PageFile. It's very easy to find online, but if you can't figure it out, I'm happy to write the steps.

Those are GREAT instructions if you are attempting to use the built-in partition tool from Windows. But the OP is trying to use Acronis, which should need to go through those extra steps. It can handle the "immovable" files, that the Windows Partition tool can't.

Oh wait, I wonder if the OP is trying to do this while the OS is running. I always run Acronis (or any other partition tool), while booting from a CD.

I'm assuming that the OP is doing it while windows is running, or he wouldn't be bumping into this problem.

Good recommendation for the OP to boot outside of Windows to make it all work.
