I used a program to check the product key for my new laptop (no I haven't formatted it yet) and still with the original windows installation out of the box. Why is it that the product key that is in windows not the same with the product key on the sticker at the back of the laptop? is this normal?
thanks.

they should be the same.
what notebook did you get?
where did you buy it?
more info, please -
This is the manufactors volume license key. I would write it down. If you use the retore option from either a backup partition or from restore disks you have to make yourself, this key will be automatically used. this key doesnt need to be activated. The key on the product key label is unique to you. this can be used also, and will require activation at first. Either way, both keys will work.

- Bought it direct from an HP reseller
- the product keys are really different. :-/
