Icon spacing is at Control Panel > Display > Appearance > Advance > Items and there there's a drop down option for horizontal and vertical item spacing.

Control Panel >> Personalization >> Window Color and Appearance >> Open classic appearance properties for more color options >> Advanced >> Item (drop-down menu) choose your icon spacings...

thank you very much. i also found in there how to unbold everything (it was actually just the specific font) although i couldn't change the taskbar settings. is there a way to change the font on the taskbar?

also do you know what the standard font is on XP? i can't remember what it was but i liked it.
