Well the story is i'm goin to college and since they limit the bandwidth, I won't be able to download much. I want to use ultravnc to connect from outside of my lan to my home computer so I can download stuff, but I don't know how. All I know how to do is use vnc within my home network. help?

Simple, install ultravnc on both pcs, run the server mode on your desktop at home. If youre using a router at home forward the ports and your done. At uni start up the viewer, enter your ip address from home, pass and connect :)

Multiple computers are running vnc server at my house; should I make sure all of them have different ports?

Yes. Assign each a different port and make sure you forward the appropriate ports on your router to the different computers on your network. When you want to access a different computer from your uni, append the port number to the end of your IP address with a colon (e.g. 123.456.789.111:5900). If you can't remember your IP address (or if it changes everytime you restart), get a DNS redirecting service (such as NoIP.com).

    cheers!

Yup; ultravnc is a windows program, so it won't work unless the comp. is on.

Update: Figured up how to set it up, had to do forward the server ips on my own lan. Now I can type in "my ip":"port#" and can access my computers (Only tried this out at home, it should work outside my house right?). I registered for dyndns.org and am trying to get a that set up. any help still appreciated.
