When I opposite click in the task bar and select properties then customize I should be able to change the behavior of the icons in the notification area. It is totally disabled and I can not hide any of them. Hide when inactive is the only selection showing and the drop down arrow next to each icon will not function. I have looked on the web and not found a solution thus far. The operating system is XP pro service pack 3.

Has this got anything to do with trying to customize as a non-admin?!! Have you tried doing this from as an admin?

fonduekid: Thanks for the reply. I know what administrater means on my XP Pro box. Do not know what admin means. I have solved the problem through trial and lots of error. I had a hard drive crash several days ago. I was loading some of my 3rd party software on the new drive when I found that I could not change the behavior of the icons in the notification area any longer. I restored it back a couple of hours to before I installed eboostr and it started working again. I finished loading everything else back on and it is still working. Another problem that may have caused it is some of the programs I am updating are updating to the wrong version for an XP Pro box. The only change I have made from the previous setup is Office 2010. The Synaptics update I used before that is a general updater for several versions gave me a version that froze up the right top area of my touch pad. I had version 15 on there before from the same down load and it gave me the appropriate version. I searched the web and found version 14 from major geeks it works fine. The update from Broadcam that I had recently downloaded gave me a different version than previously. I had a hard time figuring out the changes I needed to make in m-Router and the bluetooth configuration to make my palm work .
