I just upgraded my laptop's SATA HD with a new hitachi 160gb 5k250 SATA. Successfully cloned my old HD into the new one. Now I get this unknown PCI device that pops up every time I log in:

    - hitachi's HD website says that they don't offer drivers for their HDs.
    - I ran windows update and it didn't find any drivers for it (btw I'm running windows xp pro w/sp2)
    - Weird is that that PCI device is refering to an IDE ATA/ATAPI controller when my laptop is using SATA already..

    Thanks for reading.

On the Details tab, what is the information listed for Device Instance ID?

do you perhaps by accident connect your sata hd to a pci card connector rather than the actual motherboard?, this is quite common in raid situations

Nope not a PCI card connector since its the only socket there was in the laptop. It was the same socket that the previous 2.5" laptop HD was connected to.

    That's the Intel disk controller.

Try right-clicking on it in Device Manager, choose Uninstall, then reboot and see if Windows detects it properly.

If that doesn't work, then reinstall the Intel chipset drivers.

I uninstalled it and rebooted and yet the same driver detection window pops up on first log in.

I also reinstalled the intel chipset drivers and still the same problem exists.

    Weird thing is that:
    - If i select "search for compatible drivers" and have it not find any suitable driver; the exclamation mark would remain on the PCI device icon.
    - But if I cancel the detection; the exclamation mark is now gone....

So thanks for the help. Looks like I can live with pressing cancel every time I first log-in into windows. A little hassle but it easier than having to reformat and reinstall all over again.
