    upgrading a laptop to vista ultimate

    hi im going to purchase a dell xps with vista home already installed. i want to install my own copy of vista ultimate, but im wondering will there be drivers missing because the xps is dell and probably has prorietary drivers needed for the touch pad and stufF??? thanks.

    not if you upgrade it directly without formatting the HDD. at least i believe not.

    I dnt think it will be missing.but you can always download the drivers from dell if you have to.

    There is no difference between Drivers for Vista Home or Ultimate. You can always use drivers that Dell gives you with Ultimate version.

    i understand taht ultimate and home will include the same drivers, but i know that dell has to include some of their own drivers that i doubt would be included in vista because they would be specific to the part in the dell. but i suppose youre right that icould just download the driver from dell.com. i know that dell and other companies usually include their own software and addons in an OS that they send a computer with which is the only reason i would reformat and reinstall.

    Theres actually no need to reformat and reinstall. If your have the vista ultimate install disk you just put into your dvd drives whilst in vista (whichever version you currently have) and then select the upgrade option.

    Therefore the drivers you have already installed will still be present. Voila - no problems with drivers. At least thats the way I remember it working on my Acer Aspire 9302 I upgraded from Home Premium to Ultimate a few months ago...
