i figure since this machine will be replaced soon, and with the fact that the RC build doesnt expire for over a year, it'd be safe to install it and not have to worry about it grenading in august, right when i start school (i'm getting a new laptop sometime soon anyhow). i'm still wondering though, if i use the "upgrade" option, will it transfer over ALL my files, such as music, pics, etc? or will it only transfer my documents? i did a clean install of Vista Basic not too long ago, and really dont care to go through the whole reloading music and pics process again lol...thanks guys

80 GB hard drive = <80GB of documents.

At least make a back up of your important documents, you don't have to move them off of the computer, but please make a backup.

oh, i do routine backups, as well as an occasional backup of all important stuff to CD's. just wondering if it will import all that stuff without me having to use the CD's to "reload" it all again...just takes alot of time with all the music and pics i have

If you upgrade to windows 7 then you will have everything in your user folder. That includes the folders music, documents, downloads, favourites etc. You will also keep all of the files in the public folder. All of your installed programs etc. Upgrading is soooooo much easier than a clean install, but it can get a bit dirty as far as if you have any problems then they get upgraded too, and sometimes amplified.

So if I am unsatisfied, is there a way to downgrade rather than formatting and reinstalling vista?

Id backup all files/folders man, and just do a clean install of 7 into ur drive.
upgrading can lead to problems if you have tons of applications and programs installed in x86+x64.. But then I again I never upgraded with my xp and vista installs.

If you have Vista Business or Ultimate. Do a Complete PC Backup. That way you can revert back to Vista should you not like 7. Otherwise, no chance of going back without formatting and reinstalling.
