I am going to purchase a new laptop with 32-bit vista. I will probably upgrade to 64-bit in the next 6-9 months. I already know about the pros and cons of running 64-bit.
What I want to know is: What is the cheapest route to upgrade to 64-bit from a pre-installed (I guess that's called OEM) 32-bit windows. I called microsoft and that said they don't ship out 64-bit version for OEM. Otherwise I think it was something like $10 to ship the 64-bit version of the exact same RETAIL 32-bit version you already own.
So would an UPGRADE version work or would I have to buy the FULL retail version.
Or, what if I knew someone that had an upgrade 64-bit disk (which I don't think I do) and I used that to install but use my previous 32-bit product key?
Suggestions?

You would have to purchase a retail x64 upgrade version. The 32bit key for an OEM copy will only work for 32bit OEM.
