You won't cause any physical damage to your HD.

Be sure you backup any data you can't stand to lose and have a method to restore the OS software on your HD. As with any software that can modify disk parameters such as partition sizes you could corrupt the data on your drive if you aren't careful and have to restore the software on your system.

There is always a chance of corrupting/losing data when shrinking a partition full of data. This is why it's very important to backup all the data before shrinking a volume like deeastman stated. Also, I'd suggest Acronis Disk Director over Partition Magic.

I got my disk corrupted after running Partition Magic. And one word of warning: do not use it if you have Vista or if you have large hard drive (>134GB). Partition Magic is quite old and never been updated since May 2004.

I second Stewie. I had partition magic crash my hdd once, leaving me to format and reinstall; on the other hand, I've found Acronis Disk Director to be quite useful at juggling and rejiggering partitions.

Acronis Disk Director is up-to-date with Vista, and I've shrunk many Vista system partitions without any problems.

You should also run ccleaner and defrag your hard drive before changing your partitions. If everything is compact and in good order, you'll have less chance of corrupting data. Not no chance, so don't forget to back up your data.
