    Try RealPlayer. It might work.

RealPlayer maybe? That's what my computer uses to open .avi files, no problems here.

VLC media player will play almost any format...

If you want to play avi files in WMP, then you will need to download the right codec. Divx should do fine(just install the codec, no need for the player)...

No. Media Player. You need the necessary codecs installed. Install PowerDVD and see if this fixes the video problem.

I think VLC has it's own codecs built into the software or something. If you want to play the file with whichever media player you're using at the moment (media player, real player etc.) then you probably need a codec pack. I use Storm Codec 5.
Be careful though, I have read on some sites that it has spyware but I haven't come across any so I'm not sure how true that it. Otherwise you could just do a google search for codec packs.

CCCP codec + Media Player Classic. No crummy GUI, Plays everything under the sun, and the max RAM usage I ran into was 32K playing a HD video file. Extremely light weight. It is like the NOD32 equivalent for entertainment.

I'd use gSpot and find out which codec you need. Then get that codec. Stay away from codec packs. They are generally nothing but trouble. VLC also will handle most anything you toss at it.

Highly recommended, along with GOM Player, both of these have the codecs embedded so you don't have to install them whether thru packs or individually
