I'm running vista(host) and XP(guest) os on my dell xps1210. Since both are running at the same time would this affect battery life? I get the impression it does.

Obviously yes,and since Vista [over]uses GPU this will affect you much if you have turned Aero on [what is your GPU].
So I estimate about 20% (with no heavy visual effects on Vista's side). -
Even with XP and XP it will always use more resources when running a VM. Even if the host is not active it will still be running background processes windows always runs. Also the guest will require extra CPU power for many tasks. For example it is running a virtual network card which requires the CPU to calculate extra things compared to a normal hardware card.
