I recently ordered a tablet pc from HP, the tx2500z. It came with vista 64 home prem. and i wanted to do a clean install of vista32 on it.

So i took a disc from dell, it wasn't a recovery or restore disc it was just a disc labeled "Reinstallation DVD windows vista home premium 32 bit"
so far it has worked until the last step of the clean install

its been at the last step for about 2-3 hours, so i went to go watch tv
and when i came back the screen is now black but the mouse is still able to move around.

should i wait it out or cut the power?

I think there might be some problem in the installation ... try restarting the setup process

PS : Why do you want skip x64 bit and install 32bit ?

the main reason is because for tablets, vista 64 doesn't have a function in microsoft one note that vista 32 does. and as a student, that function is really useful.

would it be stupid to have tried this in the first place because the disc was from dell? and my machine is from hp?

it may be. if it is simply the default disk it should work. but if dell modified it it may not work (but it should not crash at the file copy task theoretically. that should work always).

another thing why i think its just install media is that on the disc it says
"This DVD is not for reinstallation of programs or drivers."

but what bugs me is it stops on the last step. doesn't the last step mean that the installation has finished and they are just doing last minute touches so to speak?

search a friend who has an ordinary cd and try it with that. it should work. i'd hand over the image of my shiny hologrammed vista32bit with sp1, but it's a bit much to send over the interwebbles..

not really much over there. it's lovely. the battery died and i could still not get my *** up to get the thing replaced (it's not the battery but the power connection in the notebook that got messed up by the faulty battery :(). but it's nice and fast with the ssd in. it was quite slow due the hard drive before..

it may be at completion it tries to initialize the drivers from disk or something and it may be those are some dellspecific ones that then hang. i could give you access to my iso file this evening but that would be one hell of an upload... :)

oh it is great.. just the thing about non-easy disk access is quite sad :(

actually, just the vendor-manipulated disk thingy is bad. all the rest would be fine. bloatware, castrated disks, no disks at all, etc..

i'm happy i was able to buy one 64bit and one 32bit disk (oems) around here. oems are legal in switzerland to install like ordinary licencees => no biggy.

i quickly imaged the disks as i know everyone one day'll need it (reinstall, hdd crash, what ever)
