Hmm.... I'll have to check this out...
-
Well i'm trying this out. Downloading a video right now.
-
oh, and it works for xp as well - just remember to minimize vlc once the video gets going.
mpeg files use much less resources than wmv
for looping the same video, make sure that playlist -> repeat is checked

i m running "coral" (720p) downloaded directly from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx
in my xp partition

I'm gonna be using Robitica once I get the Vista codecs installed.
Anyone getting VLC working on Vista? It won't play any of my videos.
-
vlc works fine here under vista - try to set ur video module output to driectx (settings->preferences->video->output modules [check advanced option at bottom right]->directx)
cheers ... -
I haven't been able to get the "dreamscene" working. Whenever I minimize I just get a black wallpaper.
-
that could also mean that u r at the end of the clip. u followed the exact instruction as in post #2?
cheers ... -
I followed the detailed instructions. Whenever I minimize I make sure that i'm the clip is still going on. When I right click the video wallpaper has a check next to it.
-
ok, i am running my coral with vlc in vista right now - NO issue with minimizing, the wallpaper is running fine
vlc ver 0.86a - no vista codec pack!
cheers ... -
When you minimize do you still see VLC right above the start orb?
-
yeap!
cheers ... -
try this:
. open vlc
. click on playlist icon on the main screen (right below "video" tab)
->manage->simple add file
. browse to where ur file is (make sure that is a 720p version, the 1028p is pretty nasty)
. choose it
. close the playlist window
. under settings/preference/playlist, make sure that "repeat current item" is checked
. play the clip, right click in the middle and choose "wallpaper"
cheers ... -
Don't know if this made a difference but do you have sidebar open? Can you tell me what you have checked for DirectX output and wxWidgets?
Here's a pic of how it turns out.Attached Files:
-
-
. settings->preferences->video->output modules = DirectX video Output
. settings->preferences->interface->main interfaces->wxWidgets (checked "embed video in interface", "Size to video", Playlistview =normal)
. settings->preferences->playlist-> checked "repeat current item", "automatically preparse files"

Awesome, I already knew about this but didn't figure it as a Dream scene workaround.
-
i've been palying around with it, using windows movie maker (or whatever tool) to make a video clip out of a bunch of (family) pics, then together with vlc as a changeable wallpaper - no resource hog, freeware, no spy/ad-ware moving desktop wallpaper
cheers ... -
Well it's now working
Thanks for all the help qhn. I guess there was something you had checked that I didn't. Rep added. I wish there was aero still. Hopefully in the next release.
-
i doubt that vlc can ever be intertwined into windows since it is an open source app
on the bright side, whereas my system performance would bog down when i use vista dreamscene (& app crashes), using vlc-dreamscene has no downside effect to the system performance.
The truth is that the vista BETA dreamscene still has many hiccups, especially when changing scene. May be after a couple more updates.
Stardock offers DeskScapes (freeware) to work along with vista DreamScene, and it does eliminate the bogging down of vista. Problem is that one can only download may be ONE scene per day (or more? i have not tested out the 2nd day yet), for unlimited downloads of scenes, one must subscribe to StarDock services - meaning $$$ - clever.
as in previous post, u can make ur own (HD as well) video/movie clips from pics or short clips using the tools that come with vista, and to create one's own dreamscene and changeable wallpaper/desktop backgrounds with cool visual effects - and no resource hog! I have tested so far with 3 minutes clip, with loopback, under vista and xp - no hiccup

We need more free sites for good quality clips.

hot dog!
just downloaded a "pirate" mp4 clip (HP trailers at http://www.darkhorizons.com/trailers.php & http://www.highdefforum.com/archive/index.php/f-15.html) - HD/720p/64mb - i've got a "dreamScene" WITH AUDIO!
if one turns the sound down (mute) before minimizing then it will just run as silent clip
so, i guess one has a bunch of high quality clip from trailers, free and available out there
totally cool!

2 wonderful HD clips from San Diego (from a german site), make sure u chose HDTV (1280x720) clips
http://www.rdkleinpowerb.de/computertrend/html/san_diego.html
http://www.rdkleinpowerb.de/computertrend/html/birch_aquarium.html (finally an aquarium desktop with sounds/music)
vlc handles xvid files beautifully!
cheers ... -
Are you limited to using a HD clip are you? On my Ubuntu box, I use a hack job way of running mplayer as my wallpaper. Works great for my anime.

No any video will work, its just if its not high quality it will appear grainy just like any low quality video upscaled to fullscreen.
-
Oh cool! And does it work on XP? If so, I might have to check it out.
-
It works for XP too.
-
I have the latest VLC Player. Changed the settings under DirectX but when I right click a movie I do not get the "set as background" option.

Is there a way to make so you can not notice when the file loops? I have tired a few clips but I can see a slight pause when it loops and its annoying...

Stardock doesnt require money you just have to join them as a member.
I am a member and its free and you can download all you want with the exception of a few "premium" dreams that you have to pay for on an indivdual basis. I have like 200 somthing dreams. However I only used it for a day or two before I figured I prefer a static desktop (no cpu use and its just more normal)
I must also add that Windows Vista Home Premium and Business both have all the needed components to run Dreamscene its just not included, so if you find a place to download it, you can use the normal dreamscene and not have to use the VCL workaround... Wich means keeping Aero.
Then I must had Home Basic can run it aswell but first you must enable Aero... and thats a complicated mess with registry editing that you can find online aswell. -

Its one thing to let somebody know there is a potentially illegal patch out there, so they can go find it on there own. Thats ok.
However to post it directly definitely is not, I would delete your post if I were you. -

I'm thinking of using an animated GIF picture as my "video wallpaper".

i tried this one a while back - nifty thing. but i removed it due to cpu stressing out

when I right click on VLC, I dont get set as background option
-
. where about in vlc that u right clicked?
. follow instruction in post #2 correctly?
. review in post #17 and post #29
cheers ... -
i right clicked on the playing video. Before when I had XP I could set it as wallpaper but not now. Please help. ive gone through all the steps and followed correctly and carefully (already enabled wallpaper mode in DirectX).
Could it possibly be my graphics card drivers? -
there is no difference in set up in xp as in vista. i doubt that ur gpu driver was the culprit.
under video out put module->directX->directX video output, u should see an option to "enable wallpaper mode"
cheers ... -
Yeah I just tried different video drivers and thats not it...
oh well, I'll do more investigating.. -
TO show you what I mean, here's a screenshot:
http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/812/untitledah8.jpg -
totally interesting - i will look more into it as well
btw, what is ur vlc version?
cheers ... -
I'd like to point out that that article does it the hard way. You can get Movie wallpapers via Video, then clicking wallpaper.
-
-
but the original poster (not me, i just refer and add my experiences) had a brilliant idea with the article. One can make ONE OWN'S Video Clips (much more personal) and use it as own's wallpaper - slide show, family clips .... - out of this
cheers ... -
cheers ... -
Man it's really anoying that when you enable directX output, the scheme switches to basic. You have to enable OpenGL output to get rid of that, but then you won't be able to set a video as wallpaper. Damn!
-
i also don't get the wallpaper option when i right click.... i have the same problem as dsam.
