Really? I love the Vista Alt+Tab. Especially with 20 windows open when I'm creating collages or something, identification is simple with the Vista Alt+Tab...

    LOL...
Anyway... you can turn off Aero, but you turn off a lot of other stuff in the process. I don't know how to just turn off alt-tab thumbnails, unfortunately.

    Why was that so funny?
    It's an alternative to alt+tab

And theres definitely no confusion in what you're finding with it.

It's funny because the OP is trying to avoid thumbnails and get icons like in XP, and win-tab is essentially bigger thumbnails.

I guess you have a point though... if you have trouble recognizing the small thumbnails in alt-tab, you might do better with the large thumbnails (or whatever you call them) used by win-tab.

EDIT: Also, AskGin, with alt-tab it does show the program icon in the lower-right corner of the thumbnail, if that helps at all... and it prints the window title above the thumbnail.

i considered the windows tab as well, and also noticed the little program icon. i guess ill just have to get used to the visuals that alt+tab gives me lol.. i got xp on home computer and vista on the laptop and even though i like xp better, vista's becoming really popular. thanks for the help guys!

i'm going for kind of the opposite here - i have aero disabled so it's plain and basically looks like windows 98. however, i do like the alt tab of vista's aero. is there a way to add that functionality?

Try re-enabling Aero, and then disabling all the parts of it you don't want... even if that means disabling most of it.

Control Panel > Sys & Maint > Perf & Tools > Adjust visual effects, and uncheck most or all of the boxes. (Or select "Adjust for best performance".)

You can also right-click the taskbar, Properties, and uncheck taskbar thumbnails if you want.

EDIT: Never mind, I don't think you can really get any thumbnails with the Windows Classic look. But you can turn off a few of the Aero features like transparency and still get the alt-tab thumbnails.
