I takes me 61 seconds from pressing the power button!

How long does it take for your system.

There is also a Vista tweak sticker at the top of this forum that can help you to accelerate the booting process, however it did not work for me, I implemented most of them w/o any noticeable improvement, but the sticker is very informative and show you what you can do to tweak your machine.

I just tried the 1 below and it did not make any difference at all!

    Tweak #6-Disable Vista Search Indexing
I have the unchecked part already done.
    My question pertains to this:1. Click on start/run and type in 'MSConfig' and hit ok;
    2. Click on Services tab and find Windows Search
    3. Uncheck/Apply and Ok...Your done!!!

you have to do the whole list of tweaks to get a real performance improvement. I managed to drop 15secs of my boot time, however I prefer to use my own tweaks. Disabling indexing won't really improve performance much- might improve read /write speeds a bit tho.

Why would you expect it to make any difference? Search indexing isn't something that happens during the boot process.

    - First, make sure you have SP1 installed.

    - Disabling Superfetch will probably improve boot times. The downside though is that your programs may take a little longer to start up.

    - Defrag your hard drive.

    - Run Windows Defender > Software Explorer > Show for All Users, and disable any stupid third-party startup programs... especially anything from Apple, Adobe, or Yahoo, or other nonsense like that.

    - In the tweaks guide there was a tweak related to turning off something handling multiple monitors. I haven't tried that, because I actually do use multiple monitors. But if you don't, you may want to try it... I think Les said it helps boot times a little. Ok, there it is, it's tweak #1 in Les's guide.

    - Tweak #16 in Les's guide looks interesting... I don't know how effective it is, but... you can play around.

Also... what are your system specs? And how fast is your hard drive?

Also, as someone mentioned, boot times don't matter that much because you can usually just use sleep and then resume quickly.

It should be from time you press the power button, to the time your programs load up.

    hmm..
the microsoft screen where the green bar scrolls - the bar passes 13-14 times
    why's this?

i've stopped a bunch of services from starting automatically -cutting processes from 80(!) to 57, and i defragged about a week ago.

won't do a clean install until i ever call lenovo and ask for my windows vista dvd.

    takes just over a minute

Don't know. Disable the GUI using MSCONFIG and the no gui boot option, on one of the tabs somewhere, I forget which one. It improves boot time a bit (by about a couple of seconds in my experience).

My vista install despite having SP1 on it (which is rumoured to improve speed, whether that's boot time as well I don't know) takes about 90 seconds to boot from pressing the button and that's without a login page, it goes straight to the desktop...

I've done all the tweaks under the sun, defragged the HDD on a regular basis using diskeeper, disabled this that and the other and it still takes about 90 seconds, certainly more than 60 seconds.

My XP install on the same machine however only takes about 30-45 seconds to boot to the desktop from pressing the power button...

Specs of my machine are -

    AMD Turion 64 cpu - 2.2ghz
4gb of RAM on the boards
    nVidia Geforce GO 6100

Dunno what the HDD is though. And all unnecessary bits like the ethernet port are disabled...

the option 'no gui boot' is on the boot section of msconfig. Like some of the previous posters, i disable many services, and all startup programs. I can boot vista in 40 seconds, even on my lowly specced laptop. Whilst in the boot section of msconfig, click advanced options, then change the number of processors to 2 (if u have a dual core cpu). let me know if u notice a difference :)

oops. i didn't read the poll correctly. i voted 30-35 seconds, but thats on osx.

i did the start up with a regular macbook, and it took 31 seconds from power button to being able to launch an app.

and then i did the test with my macbook pro, and it took 32 seconds from hitting the power button to being able to launch an app.

even though the background and dock came up before 30 seconds, it took an extra couple of seconds for it to settle down...

i'm guessing some other people who voted in the 20-35 second range might not have been using vista. my bad.

"no gui boot", takes my system 65 seconds to boot opposed to the normal 61 seconds.

On my Sager 5793, it takes 11 seconds to POST, another 21 seconds for Vista x64 to boot, then another 5 seconds from the time I enter my password to the time I have a desktop I can interact with. So total is 37 seconds.

My Macbook Pro, which is only slightly slower (2.4ghz compared to 2.5ghz) and otherwise has very similar stats, takes 40 seconds to go from the initial boot tone to a usable desktop. Mind you the MBP has no visible POST and does not by default ask for a login.

the user experience of the no gui boot option, has been less than reliable. Differences in boot times may just be random variation, perhaps someone shud start a poll, showing their boot times before and after using 'no gui boot' lol.

In the end, it all depends on what processor you have, the amount of RAM available, and the type of hard drive (SSD will boot up faster than conventional HDs). Would most people agree that the processor is the most important factor though? After coming from a desktop Celeron 2.8ghz to a T7250, I sure think so.....

Uh... if we're talking about boot times, I would think that hard disk speed and amount of RAM are more important than processor. Haven't done testing though. Although some people have found that having more than enough RAM actually makes bootup take longer if Superfetch is turned on, since it fills up the cache. But not having enough should make it take longer too, since it'd be swapping a lot.
