alright so recently, when i log out or do the lock out (windows key + L) it goes to the vista login screen just fine, but after staying in that mode for a while with the screen closed, i just see the background of the vista login, and the mouse. there are no other buttons, no welcome text, no password box for me to get back in. i have to manually shut down and put it back on in order to access windows again. anyway to fix this?

Have you tried a system restore back to before this started happening?
-
the only option for it is today

Another suggestion is to review the power schemes, see if your laptop devices are being locked out or turned off to save power etc ...

have you some additional security software, like fingerprint readers and such installed? if so, uninstall all of it.
my fingerprint software once messed up, and then locked me out of my system (as i configured it that a password alone is not enough to login, and windows remembered that). happily, it wasn't happening right before a gig, i would have looked really stupid then -
nope my power schemes are the same as before. i just did a battery check and it said that i need to replace my battery because it is faulty, and HP will send me a new one. could that be why? i mean i took it out and havent tried it since.
nah i dont have any fingerprint readers or anything. -
k apparently its gone (but i took the faulty battery out so idk if that was the cause or not)
vista log out cant log back in no password box
