I tried to install sp1 and the result was an unresponsive system with a blank screen. No error message or anything else. After running startup recovery and system restore I'm back where I started. After some googling, I discovered that my sound and fingerprint reader drivers are incompatible with sp1. The problem is I can't find drivers that work for either device. I know the sound is by realtek, but have no idea what the model is. The fingerprint reader is an AuthenTec AES2501a, but I can't find a driver newer than the one I have, 7.7.1.2. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, if I uninstall/disable these devices, would sp1 install properly since neither are system critical?

If I remember correctly, the issue was SP1 being installed over top of the drivers that caused the problem.

If possible, try removing the drivers through device manager, installing SP1, and then re-installing the drivers once the SP1 installation is complete. I haven't personally run into this problem (at least not yet), so I am just going from memory, but I'm sure I read or heard this as a solution.

Also, I was just reading this article today:
    http://news.softpedia.com/news/Here...39-t-Play-Well-with-Vista-SP1-RTM-81152.shtml

that lists all of the offending drivers. Pretty interesting, since most of those are almost "standard" components and drivers these days.

    Hope this helps you out.

Uninstalling the drivers didn't fix the problem. Any other ideas? I can't find anyone else who's had this issue.

"If you choose to install Windows Vista SP1 via the standalone installer available on the Microsoft Download Center, Microsoft advises that you first visit Windows Update and install all optional drivers. Read Knowledge Base Articles 948187 and 948343 for more information." this is what microsoft said before installing SP1

They RECOMMEND using windowsupdate.microsoft.com to install sp1 because of driver issues

You can also just hide optional downloads.

I'm giving up on this one. I've tried everything I can think of and nothing's working. Thanks.
