i did a clean vista ultimate installation for my laptop. everything seemed to be working fine until i started installing the windows updates. it seems like its taken a bit too long to install some updates. i left my laptop on at 2am to finish the installation, it was installing update 19 of 71, and when i woke up this morning at 11am it was still on update 19 of 71. has this happened to anyone before??

Well, I never tried to install 71 updates before....In most cases, you can turn off your PC and it will pick up where it left off. I know that is scary, but staring at 19 for the rest of your life is going to get dull

I have done clean updates (in fact I have to do one this weekend) but 71 does seem excessive.
Normally I do main install (ideally with a slipstreamed disc). If you need to add any SP's to the O/S I do this manually before running Windows Update. Once all SP's are installed I then run update and let it do its stuff. The last Vista install I did from an original disc took me about 2h all in
If you have a hanging update then note down what one it is and exclude it from the list when you re-run it. When all the others are done retry it and it usually goes through.
vista ultimate takes hangs at installing update 19 of 71??
