    hey folks..

just an hour back or so had some updates for vista defender n stuff, i think there were two of them..some 7-8 mbs. had them installed , restarted. checked malwarebytes free edition updates. it installed two of them too, fr itself. n went to restart the windows. now this time it took almost 7minutes to boot n showed my network connection dead [red crossed] when checked, windows confirmed that it cant find the network stuff n contact system-support n all.

well, i rolled it back to last restore point n had my soul saved. just wondering what may have caused the problem. malwarebytes updates or the vista update?

decaPODA, Just out of curiosity how old is your Vista install? mine is about 4 years and was an upgrade from XP. I have various issues (not looking for help) so I am about to image and reload VISTA, once I am certain my HD is good.

Hi Det..here I'm back again..this time with a screen-grab :) see, this is what happened when i start my windows today.. [check the attachement]
and when i rolled back with system restore..it took 8 minutes to boot the windows n things r fine. oh btw, restore just removed the same mentioned update :)
i am wondering what and why its causing this ..
    any help?

Hi Jos.. well, its been a roller coaster ride with vista for almost 3-4 years :) includes a reinstall almost 2 yrs back..thanks to Dell customer care. when they are not sure of problem..they ll make you reload the system :)
    hehe
else i never had any issue with this version of windows

Strange indeed.... did you try manually connecting to the network? I'd guess you did.

Did you try shutting down Avast?

Also, are you restarting or shutting down and booting back up again - these are interestingly enough somehow different...

    >did I try manually connecting to the network? - yup..i did.. but windows couldnt find the "network wizard"(or wt-so-ever it is might called). it asked me to contact the system support.

    >Did I try shutting down Avast? - nope.. i didnt do this..and yeah.. windows firewall also got turned off and wasnt willing to turn on :)

    >Am I restarting or shutting down and booting back up again? - well, i followed the "restart your comp" window-pop up after the updates were done. but this time it happened when i powered on my comp in the morning. had installed the updates last night itself n was working fine after restarting. oh yeah.. n booting time shoot up to 8minutes from a normal a minute n a half :)

    weird .. any suggestion?

-> Sounds like a messed up system... or it's interfering with something....

I suspect you did try the standard "sfc /scannow"? :)

Good Advice DelevCM, If it does not clear up with your excellent advice, It almost sound like malware or a virus, I would boot to safe mode after your AV and MB are up to date and run full scans. (Can not hurt).
People seem to hate vista... I am not one of them!
PS if it is a virus or malware do not forget to clear restore points after the scans are done, otherwize do not clear them (they have saved me more than once) Hope this helps, J

It needn't be malware - in fact, it would seem illogical for malware to disable the network, how will it phone home ;)

-> It is possible that something messed up a few system files though.

:( ran the "sfc /scannow" n it found some corrupted file which system cant repair. now the problem is to read the log file. i followed the instruction from How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7
but, it still couldnt get me the txt file. or may be i cudnt understand how exactly to get the readable format :|

    any suggestion?
[although i m not understanding how my system got this messed up.. :( ]

-> You know, I know his message, run it twice, it's gone... -> reboot it's there again.
Also, sometimes they might be legitimate file changes that should revert etc. I wouldn't read too much into the fact that there have been files that it thought necessary to replace. I also think MSE results in there being always "corrupted files" -> you can try in safemode too if you are worried.

Logfile - I think I might have tried it once - and then gave up... they tend to be 50MB or so .txt files in my case, but there must be somone on herewho can shed a light on that.

:| sorry Det.. but couldnt understand much of what you said. well, yeah. the log file is weighing arond 30-40 mbs. and still couldnt find a way to read it :)

would it be advisable if i go to something like system reload?
is there some option like rewrite only corrupt files or something?

    Read again? :)

-> Sfc scannow fixes only corrupt files.
You might want to run it in safe mode -> if you run it twice and the error persists, something is wrong. If it's gone, I'd not worry about it.

There must be a way to get that working without reinstalling everything.

shall let you know the results in a while :)
