with the purchase of my former laptop (acer 3050) i received in the box a "windows vista upgrade cd" which im assuming you need to use along with a internet connection to do some sort of upgrade.
i was wondering (hoping) if that very cd possibly contains a copy of windows home basic on its own?
it doesnt say on the case or cd..... but is it simply and only and "upgrade" disc or does it actually contain vista basic as well? (the only reason im assuming that it might is because i did not get any other disks with the laptop and home basic was part of the package)

It contains all versions of vista. It can also be used to do a clean install of the existing version of vista or upgrade to another version(if you buy an upgrade license online).

thanx coolguy.
so as long as i have the product key/serial.... i can reinstal home basic on another machine without having to go online? -
No, you know in Vista there is a *****y thing called "activation" so you can only activate one machine and another machine you can use it for 30 days but then it would go to reduced function mode. Not there isn't any way to get around that
-
well what i am trying to do is instal vista home basic over vista home premium which is what i have installed now and which i hate.
i had home basic on my older machine and liked it way more.
can i somehow use the authorization from my legal copy of home premium to "downgrade" to home basic? -
It's meaningless to do a downgrade to basic. You can change the windows theme to vista basic if you want to. There is no big difference between basic and home premium except the aero interface and some add-ons.
You cannot downgrade to basic using the key for home premium. -
You are forgetting that the Vista copy you received is an OEM version that does not belong anywhere else but that original computer.
-
that was my original thought, however no matter what i do i cannot bring down the system ram-drain to the same level that home basic was at (and i tried turning off all the premium things: aero, transparancy, etc...) vista alone stil taxes over 700 megs of ram while home basic taxed less than 500 megs (out of 2gigs in each system) and this is after turning off all those features in premium.
also the boot time is WAY longer with premium...basic was so very fast and with no tweaks whatsoever.
thats why i want to install basic over premium....because results speak louder than theory
vista upgrade cd that came with laptop.
