does the vista defrag show up as a service or process in the task manager?
can we tell when it's actually doing something?

also, on my lenovo T61p, the only defragger in start/programs/accessories/system tools is diskeeper, but if you go to the system32 folder, i can find the regular vista defragger.

it's also interesting that on my harddrive, properties/tools/defragment opens up diskeeper.

is this how it's supposed to be?

Run "dfrgui.exe" to get the Vista defragger UI. It shows when it last ran.

Unfortunately there's no easy way to tell if it's running NOW or not... but you can look in Task Scheduler > Defrag > History tab to see the logs, and you should be able to determine it from that. Also, if it's running now, I'd expect "defrag.exe" to show up in Task Manager > Processes > All users... but I haven't actually verified that.

defrag is the command line tool... and if you open up a command prompt as admin, you can do "defrag /?" to see the command-line options.

As far as diskeeper is concerned... if you didn't put that there, then I guess Lenovo must have.

okay thanks, i'll check for that.

diskeeper was definitely put in by lenovo, but i can't imagine why it would practically become vista's default defragger
