on my xp pro machine i enjoy shutting down with just he keyboard. when i press the windows key and the "u" button it gives me a list of shutdown options accross the screen and i can simply press another key, like the "s" key for example, to have the system go into standby. xp media center does not do this. it instead seems to work like the older windows where it would come up with a dropdown menu which requires another keystroke or two or even the mouse. how can i change this to mimic the xp pro options?

also, when i open task manager the whole screen goes blank and forces me into selection some options. i would rather have it go straight into task manager when i press alt+ctrl+del instead of blaning out the screen. how can i go about doing this?

Try enabling the "Welcome Screen" under users in control panel.

it appears that the intel pro wireless software is the culprit. i am un-installing that now and see what happens

You must have a funky installation. Windows button U pops up utility manager microsoft narrator/magnifier on my system and ctrl/alt/del goes straight to task manager.

In every XP MCE install I've seen, the task manager comes up without any options.

What you are describing sounds like Vista to me.

ok i fixed the problem. the intel pro wireless software was the culprit. i un-installed it and simply installed the wireless drivers only and everything is normal now. even task manager pops up like before without blanking out my screen.

now, if i can only find a way to have the hibernate button show up alongside the standby button during shut down.....

That's a know problem with re-installs of XP with sp2 and requires a registry hack.

Search here or Google. One option is to hold the shift button when the turn off computer menu is visible. Standby toggles with Hibernation

i did that manual registry hack per the MS web page and it did not work. i think i remember trying to make this happen before with no success. i followed the instructions exactly and tried it twice.

Personally, I'd rather not mess with the registry if at all possible. I'm fine with using the shift key and I have it set to just close the lid if I want to hibernate.
