So i just got an a8js in the last couple months and ive been having huge problems with fragmentation. My 120 gig harddrive started out reading 106 gigs, which is fine by me. The problem is that the computer has always been using an unaccountable amount of space (like...30 gigs more). Ive been using diskeeper as a defrag tool and its saying ive got 25% data fragmentation and 8% volume fragmentation. So my question is, should I just reformat the computer? My defrag tools have no way of fixing the HD and it seems to fluctuate by like 10 gigs every few days. Since vista came with this laptop i dont have the actual cd, will Asus send me one? Thanks for any and all advice!

and id still definitely recommend this laptop.

There might be a recovery partition with which you can reinstall.

What fluctuates by 10gb? the free space? The unaccountable space might be used by reserved space for the recycle bin, system restore and/or hypernation file.

Do you use diskkeeper 2007? Fragmentation is not a huge problem and defragmentation should be possible. Do you feel the laptop is slow?

System Restore is probably taking up all of that space, but I do know for a fact most A8J models have a recovery partition on them. Before I even started using mine I reformatted it and removed that partition.

hmm recovery partition aye? When I got it the first thing I did was stick the restore disk in so I could get all the drivers off. I set it to format to 1 partition, but im thinking since this isnt an actual vista cd maybe it didnt wipe the drive completely? Anyways, Ill try get a vista cd from the office and ill try wiping again. Thanks.

    Heres an update:
as of last night I was at 25% data fragmentation.
After 3 defrags with diskeeper I am now at 35% data fragmentation.
    XD
