I would suggest a 1GB+ USB flash drive.

Do you have a router? When you connect the new laptop onto your network, you can transfer them over the network.

you can also buy/make a crossover ethernet cable and configure a network just between the two laptops, in case you don't have a router/hub/switch. It can't go much cheaper than that.

If you have an external USB or Firewire (IEEE 1394) drive that would be the easiest and fastest. It is also easy to transfer all data from either platform into the HD to back up files, etc. Check www.salescircular.com for hard drives that are on sale in your area; if you don't want to wait for the mail. You can construct an external HD by buying a big Internal HD and putting it into a USB/Firewire HD enclosure (some enclosures support up to 500 GB).

I have heard that you can connect through the NIC (network cable) card but I haven't personally tried that before.

Check section 3 of the wireless guide. Then check out Windows Help under "Sharing Files". If you still have specific questions, post back.

I did it by using two screen names on AIM and then transferring the folder where all my music was.

connect the two laptops via Ethernet (RJ45 Cat5 cable) and then navigate through control panel or the start menu to find the option to make a new connection and then select the connection option to link up two laptops.

I'm using a macbook now, and I can't remember where the new connection option on XP is....

glad you did it. just curious on a side note. were they MP3 files or WAVs ?

My friends are going to WAV format now with the huge HDs, but I have not been sold on the margin of quality to storage trade-off. Am I missing the WAV boat ?

You coudl try this, it's a very simple way to save files to other computer. I have to computer at home and they both have MSN messenger, just get all the MP3 to a zip file and send it throu the messenger, if you send it to a computer conected to the same router it will only take like 3 min. Then when you're done with whatever you have to do just send them back to your computer. It's not the fastest mehtod but it's really simple.

I run a FTP server on my PC so that any of my family members can easily download/upload files from the PC. This is exceptionally useful if you've got computers on your network which don't support Windows File Sharing. Using FTP also allows the use of multiple connections to transfer large files, which thus allows you to actually max out your Ethernet connection, which normal Windows File/Folder Sharing doesn't allow.
