It is an email client. It can be configured to send and recieve mail from almost any email address. It saves all of your email domestically on your computer so you can even access it when you are not online so you can read later. I used it last year, when I had about 5 different email accounts. I got almost all of them to work, even my school email, except I couldn't get it to work with the free version of yahoo. I guess the yahoo servers did not let you use outlook unless you paid for the premium version of their service, but I tried other third party POP servers for yahoo, still didn't work.
But since then I finally kept all of my email to one service so I don't use outlook anymore. Their are other email clients out their, such as mozilla thunderbird, but I personally liked outlook better because it had a better overall package including the calender. -
Outlook is actually a pretty good email client (well 2003 is, the older versions kinda suck). If you get it free, it's worth using. However, I wouldn't pay for it, since Thunderbird is nearly as functional.
-
Instant access to email archives, offline composing, calendar and scheduling, notes, extensive contact list options, etc. It even has the option to keep a journal. Outlook 2003 is the only program (by choice) that I have that is open at all times when my computer is on.
-
GREAT SOFT that combines email, calendar, Pocket-PC synch, events, VERY GOOD at all that... only thing I HATE ... when someone send you a big splitted (say 500K each) email with outlook express last version i used from outlook didnt put it together so i had to received it with Outlook express...but i dunno if last version fixed that.
-
outlook doesn't split attachments. the smtp server does.
-
And Outlook Express (completely different program) only recombined them because it's also a Newsreader, which is different than an email client.

outlook is kinda the defacto webclient in the (US)business world. and yahoo and hotmail are coming out with betas that look just like it, but within a browser! its a lot more flexible...

So, what's the difference between Outlook and Outlook Express?
-
Outlook Express doesn't have any of the rich features of Outlook. Also, Outlook comes with MS Office, whereas Outlook Express comes standard with Windows.

Use for GMAIL

k i'm going ot try and set an email ccount up. but there's a step where it says:
Internet connection wizzard: Email server names pop3, imap, http. and incoming mail w/e and outgoing mail something...what in the world do I put in those things? -
what email are u going to configure with the outlook express mail client?? for Yahoo and Hotmail, u need to pay extra money to get their premium email packages to get access to a mail client. try gmail. that's free to access with outlook/outlook express/thunderbird etc.
POP3, IMAP, SMTP are all protocols used to deliver email from one server to another. whichever email u use, go to their help sites and search for POP3 access or something similar. or u can even google it! -
-
k i'm using gmail...but i don't know which kind of server it is and what to put in those two boxes...

outlooks greatm I can access both of my hotmail accounts for free (since I was using it for that before they said you had to pay) I also use it to access my Gmail AND my school email, its great and works well with the rest of office
-
interesting. I dunno when they changed that, but I guess I should have seen it coming... it is M$ so... Not to mention the lame excuse.
I hope they will limit it to the new accounts (yeah right).
So far, all my old hotmail accounts are still working fine with OE -
yeh, I was actually thinking of getting 'Outlook Live' so I would never have to visit the hotmail web based again, lol. You can do EVERYTHING with OL, looks wikid, contacts, calender, to-do, all synced, I do dream of having everything synced one day, lol, that includes, hotmail, msn messenger, outlook, my ipod and my phone, it would be great!
