I have a new laptop running vista
my first time managing 2 users
2 small applications
I have imported 47 gigabites of pictures from an external drive, to my internal 140hdd, using my non user account.
I don't know when it happened, but now my 140gb internal hdd only has 5gbs of space left.
vista+photoshop elements+47gbs of pictures=135gbs?
1)Have I made a rookie mistake?
2)Is there something that can help me identify where the large ggb applications and folders are?

Is weird, the same kinda thing is going on with me. I had 200 gigs on my internal HD one night, woke up, then it was down to 180. Go to school then come back and its at 176. I dont know what eatin all our hard drives but im not liking it. Any help for the two of us would be great.
-
Uh, check to see how much space system restore is using. If it's taking up its usual 15%, that'd account for 21GB of the 140GB drive, and 30GB of the 200GB drive.
-
How would i check that?
-
Or you made copies of the copy.
Search for *copy*.*
I noticed if I execute a command to quick, I end up with copies of the copy... -
aerodrome, Campe
What have you guy's installed from when this problem happend?
Campe Looks like you have the same computer like me. I have Yet to have a problem that has happened with losing space. -
Its weird. And im not to sure what aerodrome means, but i didnt install anything i dont think. I did put some Demetri Martin from a DVD on my laptop, and then ever since then i have been losing space.

Thank you night kid, im not much of a night kid so ill read it tomorrow morning
Thanks for the help guys. Hope you can help the TS with his problem too.
-
It's morning here
Be sure if you have any problem
Try WinDirStat, and take a little time to read this thread, Where's All My Disk Space Going? (Vista)
-
Maybe windows did some updating, go to the properties of the C drive, disk clean up, advanced and remove shadow copies maybe? that always gives me many many gigs back, it varies but if memory recalls vista uses 15% of the harddrive for shadow copies. maybe yours is a touch more...
-
If i do that will it hurt anything? Like if i have to restore anything?
-
"aerodrome" is European for airport.
-
Aerodrome is the OP's username...
-
It will delete all but the lastest system restore point, so if its working fine now you are safe mate.
-
All your gigz belong to Vista!

I noticed where part of my problem is...
When importing my picture files:
I had photoshop complete a backup of my desktop's picture files (catalog) onto my external drive,
then I imported the catalog from the external drive onto my laptop's internal drive,
then I asked the photoshop application to import the backup catalog that is now on the laptop's internal drive.
The thing is, when photoshop restores it's catalog, it doesn't just start fresh with the catalog file, it replicates itself (folders, files, and all) back to it's original state. I'm new to vista and using multiple user accounts, so it took me quite a while to find it originally.
I'm still interested in the responses I have gotten though, and will be using some of them anyway. I appreciate everyone chiming in.
Thanks! -
I just checked how much was allocated... 22GB ?!?!?
Ive only had this laptop a week,
I've lowered it down to like 10GB now which I think is plenty. -
just don't get pissed when you can't restore to an earlier point.
lol -
I had the same problem with my previous desktop, running XP.
I downloaded Spacemonger, and found that an old installation of AOL had left a major chunk of itself somewhere in my system. While this is obviously not the case for you since your system is new, there is something evidently lurking.
I used Spacemonger and my problems were solved, since it mapped my hard drive and showed me what was lurking...

It says XP but I am sure it works in Vista, as well. IIRC, it was trialware, and after 30 days, they want you to pay for it.
I highly recommend it. It was a lifesaver. -
I just had this problem myself, how did you change its setting because my photoshop temp file is 34 gig
absolutely shocking... -
Does it not get deleted when Photoshop closes? (It should - also shouldn't go that high unless you've opened a ton of things all at the same time) Just empty your temp files (download a hard drive cleaner, or manually do it)? That should work, as the temp file should be deleted and is only left behind if Photoshop crashes and doesn't manage to clean up after itself.
And.... unfortunately Photoshop's programmed to use up any and all space on the hard drive where it's 'scratch disk' is directed (usually install directory but you can change the location). In fact, Adobe recommends putting aside an entire hard drive for the scratch file (rofl). There are better graphics editing programs out there for the normal (i.e. you don't work in a CG studio) user. -
It didnt get deleted when it closed for some reason, I do a lot of graphic editing and didnt it notice it until now, its weird but I deleted it and its fine now with no problems in the software
-
Glad someone thought it was funny

this is the first time I have ever tried backing up like this- I could very possibly be doing something wrong. I can say it has taken me a week or so of fiddling around to finally get Elements 4.0 to boot and operate correctly- I had to delete the backup log manually as well. Probably having problems with completing the restore process? -
You will have to check with your manager or agent to try to get you more gigs.
where are all my gigs?
