i deleted the desktop shortcut and now can't access the recycle bin. where on the hard drive is it actually located?

Usually on c:\recycled though it can be relocated. It is usually a hidden folder.

There you go, follow that little guide, I did the same thing awhile back. Why you are allowed to delete your recycling bin I will never understand. -

The recycle bin never actually deletes (er... recycles?) itself, it's just the desktop item. It's always sitting there in C:\recycled or C:\recycler depending on your OS version. -
As was said, it's at C:\$Recycle.Bin

It's what pixelot said for Vista. It's c:\recycled for XP/2K. My bad.
And that guide linked above is the right way to get it back anyway, making a shortcut won't do.
