You can also usually get a cheap copy from a college or university, assuming your a student.

MS Office will not become discount they just disappear back to MS. You can search for MS Office on the net and they will list which one they are. And they will only list the latest version like 2016 version. Unless your a University student that can verify this will you get a discount on MS Office or institution that buy MS Office then you might get discount through the institution otherwise your are the mercy of the online prices and big box store prices. MS doesn't off discounts on their Core Products only Students and Institutions get those discounts.

what is the major difference between the paid version of office word and the "hotmail version" connected with free hotmail account? -
The web app version is like google docs in that everything is on the cloud, plus it has a limited set of features.
The paid version is the actual program, like it's been said before, if you are a student, inquire if your university has offers it for free to their students or at a discount. Even if they don't, look into https://products.office.com/en-ca/university, again, only if you are a student. Otherwise, your workplace may be participating in one of Microsoft's program where you can get a version of Office for your personal device at a lower cost. Otherwise, go for the basic Office 365 version or the standalone version where you won't get updates other than fixes to the specific version you have, but it will be a lifetime license not tied to a subscription. -

Do you really need MS office? There are free alternatives like openoffice/Libreoffice, which could be sufficient for you specially if you need only word processor. -

If you have a friend attending college, I bet they could get it for you on the cheap. College students typically get a discount for MS Office and MS Windows 10.

Put this way all other Clone Office say they are like MS Office so that should be more then enough info to see as to why MS Office is King of the Hill still. MS Office for the love/hate is the standard everyone wants to beat. -
I always read "like MS Office" to mean that they work with MS Office files and can save to MS files and not so much that MS is heads and hills above everyone else.
TBH, Sharepoint is the only good thing MS Office has over the clones. All else is about the same. -

Unfortunately you forget history there where others with MS Office but they couldn't make their format universal so they died a slow death. MS Office was able to make their format universal so that is why they are still head and hills above everything else. You can disagree all you want but mention Word and user say MS Office. -
To be honest, every place I've seen in my field of science and connected fields are either using LaTeX (which is awesome for anything math) and/or MS Office. Whatever your opinion of Office is, the fact remains that it is still the most used word processing program and a couple of years ago, when I was looking into other alternatives, some of the more complex functions that you could use in Office had a tendency to break in other applications. Now this may have changed since I haven't kept up with what the LibreOffice, OpenOffice and so on could do.

That's the problem when inputting formulas and complex functions you can't have your word processing failing you when you need it to be WYSIWYG input that is why I stayed with MS Office because little breaks can become a big problem. -
It is funny that Office and PC use are so closely tied to the W10 OS and keeping it alive yet M$ ignores their PC users. Launch M$ Office to run on all OS versions and see what happens to the market.

Actually they do... the other O/S is the Mac so not sure which market your referring to? Linux is too disorganized to really present MS Office to go there since no one will pay to use it. The phrase is "You can't eat Codes". -
Those using Office apps right now in Linux probably would not but those that use M$ office now on their next system choice may look into a Linux machine if it were an option.

That would be when pig fly...
As Linux is far to broken up to give Office any real competition and the learning curve is also a put off for those wanting to use Linux. General users want to fire up install office and begin using it and printing not have to go Computing 101 Linux to just do Word Processing.

Problem is whom does people recognize and use most... MS Office... And you didn't identify which Linux your talking about as Oppose to just Microsoft Windows. -
Fair enough, I'm thinking about functionality and compatibility being more or less the same. And I was thinking any GUI-enabled distro which has a taskbar-like system (or a Start-like system).
I mean, OSX's GUI is hardly different from most Linux GUIs (it just looks prettier) and laymen don't seem to have an extreme difficulty using that or its applications... -
StormJumper Notebook Virtuoso
True but its the command structure are not the same you can't just go Windows to Linux commands they are written differently and not compatible. Now if Linux became one Linux O/S then that be a different story but with so many Distro fighting among themselves they give MS no competition and easily beats them. That's the problem in-fighting doesn't help you win it makes you look kids fighting-when Windows is just one O/S that if one learns from 3.1 to 95 to 7 to 10 they are the same commands the GUI while different still have the same underpinnings. -
Eh, I mean if there was actual fighting and there were multiple Linux OSes (it's the same under the hood, just different GUIs and application suites pre-installed), you might have a point.
The real problem with Linux in terms of marketing is that most well-known OEMs don't offer it and your Average Joe doesn't have a high enough incentive to switch.
Anyway, this is a bit off-topic when the thread is about Office
.

Just looking at the wild and you can see there too many Distro even if they have shared underpinnings they are still saying there is better-doesn't help to become one Linux O/S to give MS a serious competitor. -
Just get the 2016 Microsoft Office Suite. It should be free. I got it for free from my school though.

That isn't a option for everyone so before making a over arching claim one shouldn't be overjoyed. Overmaking claims isn't a good thing to do since that option isn't available to everyone. Most have to buy Office suites for the choice to use it but well worth the money spent on it. -
^ Second. We can't make the assumption that OP is a student in an educational institution that has a deal with Microsoft to give out free/discounted copies of Office (remember not all schools even have a deal with Microsoft).

If you want to go down and dirty...the cheapest way is to look for MSDN resellers. -
Errrr... MSDN subscriptions range anywhere from $2,000/yr to $20,000/year. Honestly if you're considering that just to get Office, you might as well just pay full retail for Office since it would be far cheaper.
-
No. You don't get to pay for the whole MSDN subscriptions but rather buy them from MSDN admin account resellers.
-
Then it boils down to if they are legit resellers or not. Just my two cents, but I find it hard to believe that a reseller can sell a MSDN subscription for the price (or lower) than a retail Office package.Last edited: Feb 23, 2017

Try searching MSDN Admin account and you'll find it in a marketplace forum.

And just as quickly as I was able to Google about MSDN Admin accounts, I also found this: http://www.overclock.net/t/589581/regarding-ebay-sale-of-80-msdn-accounts-please-read
For comparison's sake, you can buy a legit copy of Office 2013 Home and Student for just $20 more: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...cm_re=microsoft_office-_-32-416-873-_-ProductLast edited: Feb 23, 2017
