ok, so i'm deciding which e-mail client will be on my laptop.

on the old one, i was using Outlook Express - not really bad and i got used to it, anyway, it gets wrecked when you store too much e-mails in one folder...

at work, i was using Lotus Notes and now MSO, the first one wasn't really great, but i must admit that i like MSO a lot. but i'd prefer something free to be honest.

which one would you recommend and why? i was thinking that i'd try Opera mail (Opera is my browser #1), are there some reasons why *not* use this one? what are pros and cons, etc?

    and some more details:
    - win xp
    - i'll use pop3 and smtp
    - i'd like to use huge amouts of mail without being scared that something messes
    - i love the threading feature of some e-mail clients
    - i also like the virtual folders feature of MSO, do any other clients have this?

well, vote and recommend, thanks :)

Been using Outlook all my life. Outlook 2007 is my choice.

eMail clients are not mutually exclusive; you can have as many as you wish installed. Just like browsers.

yep, Outlook 2007 really IS pretty good, but... Office is not really cheap. i may try to ask Santa

but in the meantime and just in case that i wasn't good enough this year, i'd like to get some orientation in this field.

actually, i'd like to stay with one. i don't want to keep my mail on the server, and i want to keep it all in one place, which means i'll need to end up with one e-mail client only. not mentioning that i try not to install too much mess in the shiny new clean machine ;)

in case that you recommend anything besides MSO and Outlook Express, could you please stress what are the pros and cons of the praised client in your opinion?

No one mentioned Windows Live Mail - the successor to MS Outlook Express - you get it for free.

Basically a newer shinyer MS Outlook Express - as far as I'm aware more secure too.

What is nice about Outlook is that you can archive mails - Live Mail can't do that...

I use gmail's webmail from Chrome... I like the interface and I feel safer not using any email client...

Strictly mail clients it would be MS Outlook 2007, works great. Though my Blackberry has quickly become my emailing sidekick.

Outlook is way too complicated for my purposes. I don't need a calendar, to-do list, and all the other extra features of Outlook. It IS nice if you can take advantage of all these features [and Outlook sure has a lot of features!] but if you're like me who just needs an email client PERIOD, go for ThunderBird. Good when you manage multiple email accounts.

If you have (or can cheaply get) Microsoft Outlook 2007, then use that. It's quite amazing. Otherwise, Thunderbird is a great option. I used it for quite a while before I purchased Office 2007 Ultimate.

Why is nobody mentioning Wondows Live Mail? I use Outlook, my mother uses Live Mail - she's happy with it. A simple client in many ways...

Agreed. I used Thunderbird for some time, but then I realized it was just easy to use Gmail. I've never needed to access my email offline because I'm rarely offline...

My grandma uses Windows Live Mail, but I find Thunderbird to be a little more responsive, but both are good "simple" alternatives to Outlook.

It definitely is, i use it at work, but i'm afraid that there is no such cheap Office for me :( the only available "cheap" Office package for students & home does not have MSO inside (it's only word, excel, powerpoint and onenote). Even a standalone MSO is cca $150 here.

quite a lot of you praise Thunderbird... i think i'll give it a try. and, nobody's using Opera mail?

Yea, unfortunately Office is quite expensive. Definitely give Thunderbird a try. I used it for many months before purchasing Outlook and loved it.

Oh yes, there are a lot of good reference lists on Wikipedia. They have them for just about every category out there.

    Reliable old Thunderbird for me.

Allows me to pick up my regular email and Gmail spamtrap with no messing about firing up a browser.
