i've been doing some research and i'm not sure which is a better burning software.

    1) roxio's easy cd creator (the higher versions)
    2) sonics (the softwares that dell laptop comes with)

or does anyone have better software that they think can beat those two. thx.

I would check out Nero. I tried the Sonic, but compared to Nero, Sonic isn't that good.

Nero Burning ROM, I think is the best. Even that Nero Express that comes with my burner is good enough for normal burning purposes

Express is basically the 'simple' mode while 'burning rom is the one with more settings. I have used all three, this is what i feel about each. Nero Ultra Edition is the most complete in terms of features, but is a TOTAL resource hog. Roxio Easy Media Creator is quite complete as well, but while still a resource hog not as bad as Nero. Sonic is simple and gets the job done minus the bells and whistles. If i had to choose one i would go with Nero, but just the Burning Rom and not the entire suite. Currently, i use Sonic, but for image related burning i use Alcohol %120.

Nero Express is better than most full version softwares available in my opinion. You can picky up an OEM copy of Nero on eBay for $10 or less. If you are really frugal, CDBurnerXP and DeepBurner are both free and work well for basic stuff.

Nero is definately the way to go. I tried a newer version of Roxio before and it crashed often and took a ton of resources. I've never had any trouble with Nero. I've made a few DVDs, burnt many CDs, and used it to backup stuff as well. It has all worked great. I wouldn't recommend ripping MP3s from CDs with it, though. It messed up the track duration for some songs I ripped.

Nero is affordable, as well, but it all depends on where you shop.

I've always used Nero, I have like 3 OEM copies of it, came with my DVD writer and I somehow got another two :p

It's easy to use and affordable as Elias mentioned
