Bad idea - I'd keep Defender.

Adobe - might be useful, yes, your laptop starts slower, but programmes load faster - if you need them often - keep them.

And don't disable them in MSConfig - use Autoruns - from the Sysinternals Suite:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx

    Then:
A Basic rule is - only disable what you added - nothing else.
Autoruns allows you to research individual startup entries if I am not mistaken.

My Suggestions from those would be the Yahoo stuff -but else you can pretty much keep everything turned on.

I've never found Windows Defender to be at all useful, especially considering the fact that he has ESET.

If they do not conflict then its good to run.

Also, if you do not wish to use Windows Defender then disable it from within the programme.
Yes there is an option to do so.

You wouldn't cut of the boot of a car to remove its contents, would you?

    Depends on what it is.

If the programme is 2preloaded2 - e.g. iTunes - then it starts up considerably quicker - else you can start the programme and make a coffee while it loads... Quicktime is the same - slow like I don't know what to start up.
Good thing - I don't use iTunes (what for?) - and Quicktime got replaced with some codecs.
Then, every time you update or launch Quicktime its back...

    i.e. its not affected...

Other programmes, may run a service - if you kill that you cannot start them.

But honestly - unless its real "Bloat" leave them on - things like the Adobe Quickstart - unless its bugging down startup considerably, and if you use it regularly, it does speed up the programme launches by a lot.

Bah. On XP disable everything with MSCONFIG.

XP will get your compuer up and running and useable. Then you choose what must stay and what must go.

I only have 5 processes running @ startup. Avira is one of them.

I'ts really simple. You are in control of the comp. Not the comp of you ;)

To put in my two cents, I'd agree with TeeJay. I prefer an absolute minimum when starting up my laptop. Startup time is far more important to me than a marginal speed boost in the initial start-up of a few programs.

That said, I prefer using CCleaner than msconfig. Keeps everything in one place and whatnot.

that laptop must take ages to boot with all that running
most of those you really dont need running all the time
unless u use all of them alot lol
u have 3 intel common user interfaces running when u only need 1 for a start

Maybe nothing?? - Leave it as it is.

People are obsessed with switching things off - in Vista and Win7 you just do damage by doing that - then come onto forums like these and whinge how things do not work and how bad the OS is...

If you do not know exactly what it does (and this means no half knowledge and anecdotes) then better leave it on.

I'm not sure anymore - but its not ideal.

That's why the dedicated utility exists in the Sysinternals Suite.

Windows Defender has been proved useless by MS(MSSE) themselves. LOL.

Don't touch Windows Services for greater good(Not suitable for newbies).
Those lame 3rd Party Start-ups(I hate most), you can turn them off for sure.
They're making your PC runs "faster" and "looks PRO".

I too like restricting the startup items to the minimum essential ones, so i'd suggest removing all, and keeping just the following:

-AlienwareFX (i'm guessing you'd need this?)
    -RAID Monitor
-Intel Flash Cache... (i'm not sure what this is for. Does it have somthing to do with turbo memory?)
    -ESET
-iTunes (i have this checked off though)

I'm not sure which of the 3 intel services/programs u'd need at startup (maybe someone else could pitch in here?)

    Cheers.

I can't stress how right DetlevCM is.
If you do not want your system to become unstable or act weird do NOT do anything you're not /absolutely/ certain about.

See, not only can't anyone know what to turn off before you don't do some research on every single entry, but when you ask other people what to turn off, they WILL tell you what to turn off while actually THEY might not really have any idea either. This way, a social web of misinformation is being created, where everyone supports everyone else's thoughts. For example:
See, Ole man suggests you to turn off "Language A..." even though he cleary has no idea what it is about (otherwise he would have written the full name, wouldn't he?). It's not the other people who will experience problems with the misconfiguration they suggest you to apply, it's YOU! In IT, it's critical to know whom to trust. Here's someone you can add to your trust list: DetlevCM (that is, of course, if you trust ME in judging about him). So far I have seen him writing many good posts which were technically accurate, gentle and free from insanity whenever he wasn't sure about something (sadly, unlike many other posts on this forum). It goes without saying though that if you think that something is critical (like a critical setting that /might/ expose your IT to security risks), you should "always check before doing", no matter who told you what to do.

Maybe it's a good idea if you post a full list of you autostart entries. To do so, please go to http://technet.microsoft.com/de-de/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx and download the AutoRuns package. In there you will find autorunsc.exe, a command line application to list autostart entries. Now, to get a list of your msconfig entries, first move the autorunsc.exe file into the following folder:
    Code:
    C:\Windows\System32\
Then, make sure there is no file on your desktop called "autorunsc-logon-m-entries.txt" (because it would get overwritten as soon as you run the following command). After you verified this, paste the following into the start menu textbox and press enter:
    Code:
    cmd /c "autorunsc -m > %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\autorunsc-logon-m-entries.txt"
This will create a file on your desktop called "autorunsc-logon-m-entries.txt". If such file already exists, it will be overwritten without a prompt. For you convenience, you might want to save this command to a .bat file for easy future use.

Post the contents of autorunsc-logon-m-entries.txt so people can better understand your msconfig autostart entries.

    Christoph

Something that comes to mind is the Canon easy-printtoolbox - this is an individual programme - IF you do not use it you can uninstall it via Control Panel -> Uninstall Programmes.

If you use it, keep it - its not your printer driver, that's independent.

It might be required for things like CD printing if you do that - and your printer supports that.

    Edit:
If you don't want to auto run Yahoo Messenger - then check in the programme's settings - it should be possible to disable it from "within".

Note that I didn't say "uncheck" - even if you don't want the Canon toolbox to not start automatically - I believe that can be set in the programme itself.

I would keep all the Matrix Storage Manager stuff - although the duplication is odd.

    Edit:
Consider if you want search protection - again - uninstall or remove from within the programme.

    Edit 2:

I believe you need Bluetooth and you need Logitech - Logitech because I assume you have some special mapped functions on a mouse or a webcam.

    Edit 3:
You need the igf stuff - that's Intel Graphics
hkcmd is an OS process - leave alone too.

Java is the update scheduler - disabling it would mean that the Java software no longer checks for updates.
This might mean that you do not get important security updates.

The Adobe Speed Launcher does what it says - it preloads the Adobe software and accelerates its launch - if you want to you can uncheck it, but its possibly little gain, test it out.

Adobe ARM - I'm not exactly sure what it does - I'd leave it turned on.

I would disable OSD Keyboard Manager, Java as it will try to update when it starts and it will probably start when you're online. Next I would disable all Adobe as in my experience use it rarely and thus don't need that to be so fast and in my start up. Groove Monitor as well.
