Start > type "cmd" in search box > type command: "powercfg -h on"

Go to the command prompt icon in the Start menu under Accessories and right click the icon: click "Run as administrator".

Then either type "powercfg /hibernate on" or "powercfg -h on" and hit enter. (Without quotes)

    (UAC disabled ?)

It might be missing, from running the disk cleanup wizard and removing the hibernate files. This is due to a known bug in Vista that might not have been hotfixed already.
Anywayz, turning it back on is very simple. :)

I noticed that when I have "hybrid sleep" enabled, that the hibernate option goes away. So look in power options > plan settings > advanced > sleep > allow hybrid sleep. When off, you can choose hibernate from the start menu. Hope this helps.

Ya. Laptop users don't really need hybrid sleep-the battery's usually in the computer and that provides a sufficient backup power source in case it gets unplugged while sleeping. Also, after a laptop has been sleeping for a while (or if the battery becomes critically low) Vista will automatically perform hibernation. :)
