does anyone know how i can install some program which request Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 in windows 7?
because i can't install Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 in win 7
-
.NET framework is already installed in all editions of win7, till 3.5 sp1.
-
Newer versions of .NET are backward compatible. A .NET 1.1 program will run correctly in all later versions of .NET.
This is a one way street however; .NET 3.5 will not run in 1.0, 1.1, 2.0.. and so on. -
ok,but does anyone know how i can install program which request Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1,because i still can't install

Not true! Multiple versions of .Net can and do coexist side by side and in some cases MUST do so. I have a particular app that requires .Net 1.1 and will not work with any newer version. If the versions were backwards compatible the installer for a newer version would REPLACE the older ones. It does not, it leaves older ones in place.

What happens when you try to install it?

Which program is it. It sounds like a bug in the program since .NET framework comes with the OS.

Yes, a version of .Net framework comes with the OS. But as I said above, even though there is a certain amount of backward compatibility between versions, that is not 100%. Some apps still require specific versions of .Net framework. That's why they can all be installed on the same machine and coexist side by side.
I am only certain of this because our application REQUIRES .Net 1.1 SP1, it won't run without it. We hit upon one of the quirks in the "supposed" backward compatibility.

No doubt about your experiences here.
I meant for my post to be directed @ the OP. -
Not so. This confused me as well, when I tried to run a .NET 1.1 program and already had .NET 3.5 installed, but it wouldn't run. When I installed .NET 1.1 standalone, the program worked fine again.
I found a blog entry where a user had difficulties installing .NET 1.1 (not sure if it's the same issue you are getting, but it might be), and detailed how they resolved the problems. Hopefully it'll help. -
I stand corrected. My apologies for any confusion. It was my understanding that my statement was correct. Thanks for informing me.

It's a common misconception. One that is not helped by some of Microsoft's own info on the topic. There IS a certain amount of backward compatibility, but the operative words are "certain amount". Some apps will work just fine with later versions of the framework, others are a bit more finicky. And that's why the installers for newer versions don't blow away older ones.

And what happens if you try to install .Net 1.0 or 1.1 (which is FULLY backward compatible with 1.0)?
Gary -
i get error
applicatio has generated an exception that could not be handled
process id=0x1405 (5128),thread id=0x1104(4356) -

What is the error that is generated? Those numbers are only the process id not the error itself. You might need to check the error logs to find out.
Gary -
that is the error, just stop installation and show me little windows with that.
also i get cancel button to debug but i can't debug
will virtual xp which i find on Microsoft site help? -

No, you don't need that. .Net framework 1.0 or 1.1 should load just fine under Win7. We still need to find the error code though. I realize that may be all you saw, but there is an error code associated with this. Did you check the logs yet? Take a screen shot of the error dialog box and post it too.

Did you follow Apollo's suggestion above? It seems to work well for a few users.
