If you search the Event Viewer, you can find out what is waking your laptop.

Or see if an error is showing up on the Troubleshooting Tool.

I couldn't find the WOL in the BIOS. it's there right?

i tried looking in the event viewer but I got confused. where exactly in the event viewer should I be looking?

I doubt it is WakeOn LAN. A special packet has to be sent for it to be awaken. And that requires your laptop to be plugged into a network connection.

Go under the System Log and look for messages from either Power or Power-TroubleShooter. It should show exactly when your computer sleeps and resumes.

Mainly you are looking for anything out of the ordinary that is waking your computer. If it was WOL, then it will show up here. If it was the task scheduler, it would also show up here, etc etc etc.

i checked my logs by time and in the one scenario where i'm positive my laptop woke up, there was a series of messages from the service control manager:

The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service service entered the running state.

The Software Protection service entered the running state.

The Windows Modules Installer service entered the running state.

The start type of the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service was changed from demand start to auto start.

The Volume Shadow Copy service entered the running state.

The Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service entered the running state.

The Application Experience service entered the running state.

    in that order.

My win7 laptop wakes up out of sleep mode and then goes into hibernate. I've seen it do this multiple times.

Do you have antivirus/defrag/etc. scheduled during that time, or is windows checking for or downloading updates?

I've had that problem in the past with windows vista, and the issue was that Media Center would wake the PC to download guide listings or updates.

Doesn't ring any bells. This is when I hit up the Microsoft TechNet forums and ask one of those Geeky MVPs.

That is a setting under the Windows Power Plan's Advanced settings.

Antivirus, defrag and other scheduled tasks don't normally wake a laptop from sleep. While they CAN, they have to be explicitly selected(by default they are not) and normally require BIOS support.

I think default the power settings has the computer go to hibernate at 360 minutes. Mine used to waked up in the middle of the night for 30 seconds then hibernate (really annoying to wake up to a movie that i was watching before bed). Im not on my laptop but if you go into you power settings either disable hibernation or set it to a longer time.

Also check into antivirus automatic update. My avg had a default at 3:00am. Im not sure if it contributed but i am positive on the hibernation...

I just found a setting in the power options that may be causing your issues:

Go Under Power Options, click on Change Advanced Power Settings. Then go to Sleep->Allow Wake Timers->Disable. This setting says that it specifies whether timed windows events can wake the computer from sleep mode. It seems to be keeping my laptop asleep now for good.

this is frustrating. it's happening every night now. i've even disabled hibernate.

the event log doesn't seem to be helpful at all. it says something different all the time. i've been told to look at what comes up under power troubleshooting and it's not helpful.

i ran sfc -scannow and it turned up nothing. The "lastwake" command turned up 0.

on the ms social forums I found this comment:

"You are seeing a bug reported many times by some users. They are all using ACPI and 'chipset' drivers that need updating for Win 7 to successfully use the sleep function."

Obviously it isn't reported often enough to be noticed by members here.

i made some changes. windows update was set to auto update at 3am... however the event logs never showed that this was actually happening. I switched this to notify only.

all wol settings were off already. there was an additional setting for the ethernet port, something to do with packets... i disabled that.
