personally, id say use XP because its newer, should be more stable, and you already use it.

If you decide on 2k pro, i can sell you my copy, PM me about it

Just remember to get the latest service pack for Windows 2000, which I believe is either on SP3 or SP4 now. Did you try installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 on it though? It is supposed to speed up XP quite a bit (somewhere between 10-20% on average) and provide better security than Windows 2000 would.

Who told you that, and did they give any indication as to why they thought Win2K-Pro was better than XP? Also, are you running XP-Home or XP-Pro currently?

Given the age and design features of that Toughbook, I agree that W2K is the better operating system. We have a few of these older laptops and XP is very sluggish compared to W2K.

Does your CF-27 have a CD-ROM drive? If not, you'll need an external drive, but I'm not sure if that laptop supports booting from an external device.

regarding win2k, the latest version is SP4 + Update Rollup 1 (sometimes called SP5).

as far as i know (correct me if i'm wrong) win2k support ends in 2010, xp will be supported till 2014.

Shyster1, they didn't say it was a better system, that it just ran better on that model computer that I have. It does have a CD ROM! I purchased one. I am just trying to get it running good so I can use it. I know there are a lot of tweaks. I don't even know how to get on internet with it yet. Just go it for a Christmas gift.( From My Daughter )
Thank You Again I will probably post again.

I personally suggest that you just go ahead with XP.

Two simple reasons: drivers and USB support!

Let us rationalise that if Vista can run good on some old XP models, then XP can be running good on some old W2K models and so on ...

You can strip/tweak XP to barebone and it will make your old comp fly, without the headache of drivers finding.

    cheers ...

Depends; if the OP's system was designed with Win2K in mind, the OP may not be able to find the drivers and whatnot that he needs for XP (although he seems to be doing fine so far).

Given that, as others have pointed out, extended security support for Win2K ends in 2010, whereas it will continue until 2014 for XP, that may be the better reason for sticking with the current XP installation (provided that it's not too sluggish), unless the system in question is never put in a position where it might be compromised, e.g., not connected to the internet except from behind a very good firewall.

To my mind, the biggest element that should be considered in deciding whether or not to switch to Win2K-Pro is this: is the computer currently operating to the OP's satisfaction, particularly in terms of not being too sluggish? If the answer is "yes," then I'd leave well enough alone and not go futzing about with Win2K-Pro. On the other hand, if it is doggedly sluggish, to the point where the OP cannot use it efficiently, then going to Win2K-Pro would be a good idea, provided that the OP makes sure that the system is always given good security protection externally (e.g., firewall on a router).

Given the age of that system, I would also suggest going with Windows 2000 Pro (especially since I think the max memory is only 192, I could be wrong though). Windows 2000, IMO is still a great OS, as it can still run a fair amount of today's applications, and is still a somewhat viable OS. Windows 2000 has support for USB anyhow.

Like I said, we have a few of these in the work place. W2K is really the only way to go. I've talked to the guys that won the contract to make these things, and they dropped support a long time ago. Drivers can be very hard to come by for XP or W2K, so before you reformat make sure you have working drivers for everything!

On Monday I'll see if we have any of the drivers floating around, and if so I'll make them available for you.

Since kegobeer's got actual experience with the system the OP was asking about, and since he's right more often than he's wrong (certainly more so than I am :D), I'd take his advice and go with a good, solid Win2K-Pro installation. Just make sure you're careful about security.

2K Pro is still my favourite offering from M$. An exceptionally good and stable OS. Just did the job quickly and reliably without hangups.

Used it for years. Now on XP.

XP is fine and looks nicer.

2K Pro stability is legendary though.

xp is just basicall 2k at the core anyway with all the eye candy so 2k shoulod run really well. if oyur struggling for drivers you can always use xp drivers as generally there compatible.
