Hi, I´m currently playing around with VPN-Connections.

I want to buy a v-server and install OpenVPN and use that VPN with my Browser,Mail,Chats,...

However, before buying that v-server i tried to create a VPN on my Win7 Home-Server and conenct to it with my Laptop. Everything is working fine and i get a VPN connection. However, I dont want to do EVERYTHING on my laptop with that VPN connection. For example I´m connected to a random wlan and play games with the wlan connection. For stuff like my brwoser/mails/chats i want to use the secure & encrypted VPN connection. How can I do that? As soon as I connect to the VPN, all my traffic is going through the VPN.

    Thanks

Right Click the VPN Connection on the client machine and click properties, click on the networking tab and select IPv4 and click the properties button, on this dialog click the advanced button and uncheck the box that says "use default gateway on remote network". But now only VPN specific traffic will go through, all other traffic will use the WiFi connection.

What you want will either require a RDP Connection and do all secure internet through the RDP or an actual VPN Server with policies (such as a Server 2008 R2 RRAS).

I haven't tried 3RD party Proxy software on Windows 7 Hosts, but using Server Products you in theory could do that.

hmm so a server solution like OpenVPN installed on linux could never be configured on a windows client to just use the VPN connection on some manually select programs (browser, mail, chat) ?

    too bad :S

I didn't say that, OpenVPN is a server product and should have some way of creating policies that the client would obey. I don't have experience with the solution you are looking to use. I know that with MS, Cisco, CheckPoint, Watchguard and even the old Novell Netware I could do what you were asking, but until Vista (and now Win 7) I would never allow it because Split-tunneling can be risky...

okay it is working. With OpenVPN, there is an option to use the VPN just like a proxy. So you can enter the VPN-IP & Port in every browser/software that supports proxy.
